I tivo the Globe Trekker programs and they are pretty much a hit and miss affair. Some episodes are likeable and informative while others are like amateur travel videos.

This one is closer to the amateur side. The host is cheerful and likeable but that does not make up for the lack of a planned itinerary.

Having lived in Istanbul for four years when I was attending College there, I can authoritatively say that this video did barely scratch the surface let alone presenting a good overview of the city's attractions. A wasted opportunity.

On Discovery HD, I recall watching an episode of "Fantastic Festivals of The World" covering some Istanbul as well as the Whirling Dervishes festival in Konya. That too skimmed the surface but it was in HD and better made.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of any decent videos that can help scout this magnificent city ahead of time.

If you have to buy one item to plan your trip I'd say buy D&K's excellent "Eyewitness Travel Guide to Istanbul" also available at Amazon - ISBN 0789427516. Masterfully laid out, with fantastic photos, good maps and factoids - I have several copies myself.

There really aren`t many DVD`s on Istanbul so if you want to see what it`s like there, here is a great way to see it. Most travel video`s can only film so much because of limited time, here at least you can see interesting things and learn of a different culture and that is valuable. Globe Trekker is so much better than most travel video`s who focus only on a Country`s commercial points of interest whereas Globe Trekker takes you off the beaten path.

I purchased this as a gift for Christmas, so we haven't watched it yet. Plan on educating ourselves before travelling there!
