When I decide to buy a book, I almost always rely on reviews of other readers to help me decide if I want to purchase it or not. This was the same for this book. The surprise was when I found my self so out of tune with everyone else. Everyone else Liked it, while I did not find it at all useful. Going around the world is a relatively serious undertaking, and I was looking for some pointers. This book had none. It was more of road impressions written in a non-imaginative style. I would borrow it from a library or buy it used rather than pay USD10 plus shipping for it. The author himself said his earlier books contained the nuts and bolts of how to travel while this one adopts a different style. If you are like me.... preparing ... this is not the book for you.

With a conversational writing style and years of experience, Bruce Northam captured my attention with his "boyhood" wonder at the world. He gives a realistic description of globe trotting, with nothing more than his backpack and a few essentials (not always money!), in "off the beaten path" places that bring out the joy of exploration of people, places and cultures. I only hope to do a little traveling like this myself someday, Meanwhile, I will read delicious tidbits such as these to tide me over for that long journey.

I really have enjoyed this book a lot. Bruce combines his personal expiernce with some very inspiring words. Reading the reviews of the people that didnt liek it as much just makes me laugh. Obviously they havent caught the spirit of the true traveler. You gotta kick back Mr. Vagabond...let life take it where you may. Dont let things trip you up enough to get all huffy and write a bad review just because you think the guys personal expeirence doesnt help you. Jealousy stinks huh? lol.
This guy has such great things to say really. Its an easy read and creates a stirring to go and figure out what the heck he is talking about. Here's some examples: "You can predict th length of you trip but you must nurture the width and depth of it." "Life is like photograqphy: we use the negative to develop." He also talks about going to the top of a building looking out towards a direction that looks interesting and going for a 1 or 2 day trek in that direction. Its great. Anyway...I liked it.

I note that "Vagabond" wrote one other review of a travel book, and said basically the same thing he/she said about Globetrotter Dogma....I found Globetrotter Dogma so enthralling that I bought several copies as gifts.

This book entertained, inspired and encouraged me to pack my bags and set out on an adventure! Bruce Northam's amazing experiences show that anyone, regardless of their background or interests, can enjoy what the world has to offer by traveling with an open mind and an open heart. I've already bought two copies of "Globetrotter Dogma" as gifts for friends and I highly recommend it!

It's about time!! "Globetrotter Dogma: 100 Canons for Escaping the Rat Race" is a refreshing and highly entertaining book. Too many travel writers take themselves and their personal "voyages of discovery" much too seriously, resulting in turgid compendiums of pseudo-inspirational homilies about the wonders of travel. Northam's book avoids this trap by offering his candid anecdotes, insights and observations compiled from years of globetrotting in a fun, self-effacing and engaging manner. Not everything is rosy in Northam's world, and he presents his free-flowing observations with an honesty and frankness borne of experience. Northam occasionally rails against the conformity imposed by our mainstream existences and extols travel as a liberating and epiphanous method to counteract society's creeping malaise, but his manner never feels preachy or heavy-handed. One can sense his intense passion for travel and appreciate that Northam truly wishes that everyone could share even a few of his many incredible and life-altering adventures. The book's format is very user-friendly because one can enjoy it equally reading it cover-to-cover or flipping through it randomly and finding a funny, entertaining or thought provoking canon on every page.

Northam's vignettes amplify, in humorous and insightful detail, many of the feeling I have while waiting for an upcoming trip. There are thousands of reasons for putting work aside and hitting the road. After reading Globetrotter Dogma, you'll want to do the same. Fewer than 10% of Americans own a passport, let alone use one. This is exactly the type of book we need to get Americans out in the world in greater numbers.

In the travel genre, Northam is one of the most well traveled and experienced. Truly a different take on each experience that actually makes the lesson itself, an adventure in literary form.
