Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Plantariums are life-giving ecosystems in which seeds germinate. The colorful gel's transparency makes the seedling and its roots visible throughout the entire germination and plant-growth process! Plantariums work as a mini-greenhouse after the seeds are germinated in a dark room. Once a seed has grown to the top of the gel, the Plantarium is moved to a bright spot so the seedlings can thrive. When the seedlings reach the top of the vial or container, the plant can be transplanted into soil to complete its growth. The kits are recommended for ages 6 and up. Complete instructions are enclosed. The Plantarium Garden Lab kit has three containers (4.25" x 1.75" x 1), each with a different color gel and seeds of three easy to grow plants ¿ basil, cucumber, and tomato. Watch and compare how different seeds germinate and young plants sprout. Mini-pots and peat pucks are provided for transplanting plants when they reach the top of the vial. The Garden Lab is simply a great introduction to plant life for kids.

My daughter enjoyed watching the roots and seeds grow. It's interesting to be able to see what goes on "beneath" the soil. Her third grade teacher was intrigued and asked her to bring them in for the whole class to see. A fun and educational product.

This product was a complete waste of money. We would have been better off using paper cups, wet paper towels and seeds or beans like I did in elementary school to learn about germination. I bought this for my 5 year old son, who was excited to have his own little garden and was also very intrigued by the fact that this is how a person might grow fresh vegetables in space.

We planted three types of seeds, following the instructions precisely. Only one (cucumbers) actually germinated and then grew to the top of the greenhouse container.

The instructions are horrible (unclear, poorly articulated, and with typos).

The instructions say to place the soil peat in the empty greenhouse and add about 5 oz. of water. The greenhouse does not hold 5 ounces of water. It says that the soil peat will double in volume and then after 20 minutes we'll have a new greenhouse full of soil. We waited and waited and the soil peat expanded slightly, but was trapped in a net and did not fill the greenhouse. It then says to re-pot the little plant, but does not say where to do so -- in the greenhouse with the dirt (which still has not expanded) or in the tiny little pots provided (which have no drainage dishes with them). It says to then replant into a garden in 2-4 weeks. I can't imagine that if the plants survive for that long, that they will be able to last in the tiny little pots or the greenhouse.

We are now going to create our own experiment, as I initially described. I would NOT recommend this product.
