This review is from: Gloria (Digitally Remastered 1996) (MP3 Download)
This is the kind of album I hate to admit I don't like; the woman seems like a great figure as a human, and all the official critics adore this album. But I kept waiting for a draw, a hook, something to make me say 'yeah!". I don't require screaming guitars or pop catchiness, but this just had the feel of someone who doesn't like rock, doesn't see much of value in it, and then manipulating it into some kind of tool to serve an entirely different function. Like a chef who can't just make a hamburger but feels the need to turn it into a masterpiece and transcend the form, only to be puzzled at why someone looking for a hamburger is disappointed.
It may be art, it may be poetry, it may resonate with people who think too much modern music is just noise. But to me, the entire album was just waiting for a connection that never happened. It's just.... dull. The fact that the only song of hers I like at all (and not on this album) is a Springsteen cover isn't really surprising. |
