4.0 out of 5 stars I Like this Cocoa
We recently purchased a Keurig brewer and, as I don't drink coffee, I was more interested in the cocoa and tea selections. Amazon doesn't sell the Green Mountain brand (only third-party sellers have it), so I decided to try the Gloria Jean's. I like it very much. To me, it is a...

I love my Keurig and my kids and wife love the hot chocolate. I was thrilled to see an alternative to Green Mountain Hot Chocolate. We have been very happy with Green Mountain, but it is always nice to have more than one selection. We tried Timothy's White Hot Chocolate and found it too sweet. Unfortunately, Gloria Jean's does not seem to make as rich a cup of hot chocolate as Green Mountain. Seems a bit more watery to us than Green Mountain. It is a palatable hot chocolate and probably better than Nestle, but I didn't feel it was as good as the Keurig competition.

Almost tastes like it has been flavored with something. Very watery, even on the low setting, bad artificial creamer taste. A few ounces of baileys will cover it up.

We recently purchased a Keurig brewer and, as I don't drink coffee, I was more interested in the cocoa and tea selections. Our brewer came with one sample cup of the Green Mountain hot cocoa, which was very good. Amazon doesn't sell the Green Mountain brand (only third-party sellers have it), so I decided to try the Gloria Jean's. I like it very much. To me, it is a nicely flavored cocoa. I have ordered a box of Green Mountain from Keurig and will do a side-by-side comparison when I receive it.

One thing I like about the K-cups over packets of cocoa mix (to me, the flavor is about the same) is that with the K-cups, you don't have to stir the cocoa. Some reviews mentioned that all the cocoa didn't dissolve, and I also saw one review that suggested shaking the K-cup before putting it in the brewer, and another where the reviewer said she first put the cocoa K-cup in upside down to pierce it and then right side up for the actual brewing cycle. I don't know what model brewer she has, because I couldn't fit the K-cup upside down in mine. I did find that if I shake the K-cup first, put it in the brewer and close the cover to pierce the cup, open it and rotate the K-cup 180 degrees and then close the lid to brew, the combination of shaking up the mixture and having two holes pierced for the water to go through results in no undissolved cocoa mix left in the K-cup (I have cut open the foil to check).

As for some reviewers saying this is tasteless/artificial tasting/bad cocoa, I can't comment on that because taste is subjective. To me, the Gloria Jean's cocoa K-cups taste at least as good as any packet mixes I've had and I love the convenience of using them. I am going to suggest to Keurig that they make a dark chocolate cocoa K-cup, because I prefer dark to milk chocolate.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the hassle, January 23, 2009

I read the reviews before purchasing and thought, "How much of a hassle can it be to shake the k-cup a bit?" Well, I can answer that it's too much of a hassle. Not only do you have to poke a bigger in hole in it and shake the mix that didn't come out, but then you have to stir it too.

It's not that I'm too lazy to do all that. But what's the point? I brought it for convenience! If I have to do all this, it's much easier to just buy something off the shelf and draw the hot water from my Keurig.

Really, just buy something at your local store. You'll be much happier.

Although I love Gloria's Hazelnut, the hot chocolate was disappointingly bad. Very watery, weak taste although it is also 60 calories and has high fructose corn syrup. I was willing to make a concession on the corn syrup and calories but certainly not when it tastes bad!

2.0 out of 5 stars weak and watery, January 19, 2009

No matter which water setting I use the hot chocolate comes out weak. Not even as good as the hot chocolate you'd get at a concession stand. The other Gloria Jean's products we've tried, we've loved - but I'd pass on the hot chocolate.

Unless you like the nasty after taste of sucralose (Splenda) do not buy this product. It has a strange sweet taste when you first try it and then the aftertaste lingers for hours. I highly recommend the Green Mountain brand of the hot chocolate, it was so much better than the Gloria Jean's.

I love my Keurig brewer for coffee. I don't drink a pot per day, so one or two cups per day of tasty brewed coffee makes it a perfect fit for me. Hot chocolate, however, is not brewed. Unless you're a hardcore hot cocoa purist, your lifetime experience with hot chocolate is dissolving a paper packet of powdered mix into a single cup of hot water. Those packets include cocoa for taste and powdered milk for taste and texture. Since the K-cup has a smaller volume than most hot chocolate packets, what you get here is really expensive hot chocolate with a watery taste. Compare the amount of stuff in a conventional packet of hot chocolate with the amount in a K-cup, and just do the math... what could be the magic ingredient that could get similar flavor and richness from the smaller volume of a K-cup? That's right... there is no magic ingredient that can do this. As a result, even if you are lucky enough to get all the K-cup contents transferred to your cup, you will still be disappointed.

My recommendation: boil water in the microwave and make a cup of Swiss Miss. The best thing about K-cup hot chocolate is that you can use the price as a justification to buy better quality hot cocoa, which will taste infinitely better. So maybe my recommendation is to heat some milk in the microwave and make a cup of Ghirardelli hot cocoa.

After a few sips, I realized there was a funny taste to this hot chocolate. Sure enough after looking at the ingredients on the box, the last one was sucralose! I wish they would mention this on the item description when ordering. My family has a bad tolerance to this stuff. If I want a "diet" product, I'll order one. I thought this was "regular" hot chocolate.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two at a time is great!, May 5, 2009

I prefer to open the hot chocolate K-cups so that I don't clog my machine. I use a travel cup so I open two into the travel cup and then put the travel cup at the largest cup setting. I love strong coffee and have tried two other hot chocolates. Gloria Jean's Hot Chocolate is becoming my preferred morning drink. It is very tasty, is good hot chocolate and even melts the tiny marshmellows. I've served it to several friends and always get a very good response. For my taste buds, Gloria Jean's Hot Chocolate is the only way to go. One recommendation, drink it while it's hot.
