No-one responds more viscerally to Christmas than the Italians. Recorded in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in December 1992, this recital bears testimony to the power of the festival. Corelli's Christmas Concerto and Vivaldi's Gloria need no explanation which is a good thing as they are completely upstaged here by Alessandro Scarlatti's Cantata O Di Betlemme Altera, which is a font of melody and longing for the Christ-Child.This is evocative and inspired music-making that is well worth your consideration, be you a shepherd or otherwise.
