Not What I Expected
As an experienced gourd artist, I admit I was tempted by the cover illustration - and should have resisted. While there are excellent pictorial offerings of work by artists I've actually had classes from, there were no instructions for those particular pieces. As an experienced gourd artist, I admit I was tempted by the cover illustration - and should have resisted. While there are excellent pictorial offerings of work by artists I've actually had classes from, there were no instructions for those particular pieces. Of the instructions given, nearly two-thirds involved tole or one-stroke painting, which is NOT what I was looking for (nor particularly versed in) at all. In addition, even the instructions given left a good bit to be desired, assuming that everyone understands the tools and terminology used, and the finished products of these pieces looked very "beginner-ish". Granted there was helpful information, but none that I don't already have from other, much more useful, sources. This would NOT be my pick for someone interested in TRUE gourd art, nor for a beginner, unless you're visually adept and can replicate a process simply by looking at the finished product. Thank goodness I decided to take advantage of the "buy both books/save money" offer when shopping for this one - the other book [Beyond the Basics: Gourd Art (McFarlane)] is worth its weight in gourds!!
