5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
If you're looking for a hard-to-put-down narrative history, this is a great one. 'Rates right up there with Shelby Foote's Civil War.

1.0 out of 5 stars History rewritten?
One of the most biased and inconsistent history books ever written. William Manchester appears to have no intended audience except for communist leaning readers without knowledge of history and no concern for consistent viewpoints. He praises "strong" Democrats for their ability to drink and then turns and labels Republicans who drink too much as "weak" and "drunkards"...

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest history of our age, October 11, 2003
By A Customer
This is bar none the finest history of our era ever written. This is Manchester's gift to the generations. A thousand years from now this will be read with the same reverence as Herodotus.

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for all Americans, November 19, 2002

This review is from: Glory and the Dream (Paperback)
This is quite simply the best book I have ever read. I first read it in 1975 in a couple of marathon reads. The material is so well integrated and intesting as to make in enjoyable and memorable. The ending is a downer, given what was happeing in the country at the time. Seen from another 30 years, Viet Nam and the societal meltdown doesn't look as bad. It's about time for an update.

1.0 out of 5 stars History rewritten?, April 18, 2011
One of the most biased and inconsistent history books ever written. William Manchester appears to have no intended audience except for communist leaning readers without knowledge of history and no concern for consistent viewpoints. He praises "strong" Democrats for their ability to drink and then turns and labels Republicans who drink too much as "weak" and "drunkards". He cites that everyone supported his beloved left wing Democrats and then states they were persecuted for their communistic leanings. By who? He just said everyone was for them!

If you would like to see how Marxism had infiltrated American Society and the viewpoint of these anti-Americans, then this is a must read. Just don't get it confused with facts, history or an unbiased opinion.
