Janet Sullivan has conviced herself that she is to me a old maid, until she meets Ryan Donovan, who is on his way to the Yukon to look for gold. After a serveral days together Ryan leaves and Janet decides to follow his. But the road the gold fields of the Yukon can be dangerous for a woman traveling alone,so Janet disguises herself as "John Glory" to be able to follow Ryan to the great white north.
I have to confess the main reason I got "Glory" by Janice Young Brooks is that I had read another book by this author. While "Glory" was ok, I have to admit that it wasn't all that good. It seem that the ending of the book could have been better. Overall "Glory" was ok but not worth keeping.

This review is from: Glory (Mass Market Paperback)
Orphaned at a young age, Janet Sullivan was raised by her aunt and uncle and at twenty-nine has given up hopes of marriage and accepted her lot in life as a live-in servant - that is until she meets sweet talking Irishman Ryan Donovan. Ryan is on his way to the Klondike gold fields and makes a quick stop in Seattle for supplies and he initiates a brief flirtation with Janet (who reads a bit more into it than perhaps she should have). Convinced Ryan wanted her to go with him, Janet cashes out her inheritance, purchases gear, food and passage and she's off to Skagway - the first stop in Alaska on the way to Dawson City, Yukon Territory. Janet finds herself about two weeks behind Ryan and she's stuck fending for herself and the price of someone carrying her gear very expensive indeed, especially over the treacherous Chilkoot trail and that little adventure puts Janet right on top of the Palm Sunday Avalanche.
Our heroine has to make many trips up and down that trail carrying her gear up and over. Any of you up for that? I'm not. As for what happens once she's over the pass? Well, let's just say Janet has a few more adventures until she gets to Ryan and Dawson City - and don't forget, Ryan has no idea Janet is heading his way. The rest of the book involves Janet and Ryan's up and down relationship, Ryan's hunt for Gold, as well as battling the demons from his past and the treacherous Yukon winter. This was a quick easy read and perfect for a stuck at home snow day, although the other books by this author I've read are much better.. The author did a nice job of writing real historical characters, places and events into Janet and Ryan's story. |
