5.0 out of 5 stars Awe-inspiring January 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has always been versatile. It's one thing, though, to tackle pieces in a variety of genres, and quite another to perform them convincingly in a way that is both idiomatic to the ensemble and respectful to the original composition. On this recording, the choir takes it one step further. Each track is so convincing that it sounds as if the work must have been composed expressly for this choir. That's not to say that these are definitive recordings--there are many ways of achieving musical excellence--but what we have here reaches a level of artistry I can't imagine being exceeded by any other choir singing this repertory.

All the tracks are spectacular, but my own musical tastes favor some more than others. Wilberg's opening "Hymn of Praise" has that kind of unrelenting plaster-you-in-your-seat potency (think the opening of Mahler's 8th Symphony) that never fails to impress. And yet his "Wonder" is as delicate and playful a chorus as you'll hear anywhere. Ryan Muprhy's arrangement of "Pilgrim Song" is a gem. The choir totally nails the "Exsultate Justi" from John Williams's score for "Empire of the Sun" (and counts Williams among its most ardent admirers, by the way.) Rimsky-Korsakoff's "Glory!" (which is basically a Russian "Battle Hymn of the Republic") hits smack-dab in the choir's sweet spot; no other group sings it with more precision and gusto. Tenor soloist Stanford Olsen shines in his three selections, but especially in "Nella Fantasia," which should prompt the Sarah Brightmans, Paul Pottses, and Jackie Evanchos of the recording industry to hang up their headphones and retire.

This CD is well-named, as it brings together some of the most glorious music imaginable from the majestic tracks like "Ode to Joy" and "Glory" to the tender tracks such as "My House" and "Nella Fantasia". An excellent addition to any choral music collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Glorious! August 15, 2013
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
Mack Wilberg is a genius! ...and of course Mo Tab sounds heavenly as always! But ever since Mack Wilberg came on board they've been singing more musically and lyrically sophisticated works than I've ever heard! And oh how it ignites the soul to shout praises, and give glory, to God on High!
