Book Description

Underhill April 1998
Frontier reporter Brady Kenton and his sidekick Alex Gunnison made their exciting return in Firefall. One year later, after Brady Kenton's discovery that his long-missing wife, Victoria, apparently had not been killed in the train wreck many years before, the travelling reporter Kenton and his sidekick Alex Gunnison are called back to Leadville, Colorado. They are assigned to cover a gala event to be held in the new Tabor Grand Hotel, which opened that year. At the last moment, however, Kenton bows out after he hears from a magazine editor friend of his that a possible clue about Vitoria has arisen, oddly enough, in a novel, written by an unknown author and published as a serialized magazine article. Hot on the trail of his missing wife, Kenton forgets about his sidekick Gunnison who stumbles upon some clues of his own.

Before long, the two are tangled in a nasty web of justice as they become consumed by "The Quest of Brady Kenton"...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not One of Cameron Judd's Best Endeavors, March 12, 1999

Fans of Cameron Judd will be somewhat dismayed by the gore contained in this work. While still very tame compared to many books, much of the violence found here is far more graphic than other Judd efforts such as Bad Night at Dry Creek, Corrigan, and Mr. Littlejohn..

The story line is as engrossing as usual, and the charcters typically come to vivid life. However, a disturbingly high number of likable folks meet tragic endings-another disappointment to this story.

From an unfamiliar author, I might have given this book higher praise, but from Cameron Judd I have come to expect a more enjoyable read, which he has always delivered in the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars So far the best Cameron Judd book I've read., June 13, 2010

This is the 4th Judd book I've read and by far the best. In the other books his characters seemed too soft. They seemed scared or incapable of violence when it was called for. In this book there is still some reluctance to do what must be done by the main character at times, but the antagonists hold nothing back. I am impressed with the way he draws the reader in and makes us care about and feel for the characters. A great story with lots of action and suspense.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Familiar Tale for Cameron Judd Readers, August 10, 2000

While Glory River is strikingly similar to his 1996 publication, Passage to Natchez, this is still a page turner. Mr. Judd seems to have a knack for the period (early 1800s) and brings to life an exciting time in American History, with all the color, vilence joy and tragedy of the real thing. In fact, the book is faithful to the history of the Natchez Trace and the surrounding areas. I gave four stars rather than five because the characters, their surroundings, the plot line, etc., do seem in many respects to be duplicates of those in Passage. But it is a great yarn and I recommend it to lovers of historical fiction. I think the other Underhill novels might be a good bet as well. After all, if Jack Higgins can re-work old plots, why not Mr. Judd?
