A much poorer Al Jarreau at his 100% creativity peak,
By Dave van der Spank (Utrecht Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Glow (Audio CD)
"Why should I work at 100% when I sell only 10% of the records with it" Jarreau once asked himself. Still, we are lucky he once did, proven by records like "Glow".
The nicest track is the title song, which shows his most velvet style of jazz singing. "Aqua de Beber" adds some latin, "Hold on me" is a superb a-capella bit, and "Rainbow in your eyes", "Have you seen the child" and "Milwaukee" give the funk it's full space. Unlike most of his later records this one is consistent, warm (even in Milwaukee), and made just for the sake of good music. His later records still feature highlights, though they are accompanied by loads of fillers. "Tenderness" is almost on par with this one though..

Al doin' it right,

A friend of mine turned me on to this album when it was one - wax, I mean. Back in high school we'd trade discoveries and when he hit me with this I was blown away. I rushed out and got "We Got By" and liked it just as much. Both of these albums are five stars as far as I'm concerned and completely blow away the later stuff that he did which turned in the direction of sappy, pop-oriented, "radio-friendly" pap. This album cooks, sways and grooves. A must. Go for that deal where you get both the above mentioned and you won't be disappointed

the jazz side of a jerreau,

This album represents the non-commercial Jazz oriented gems Mr. Jerreau can produce. Somebody's Watching You is a excellent recording where Mr. Jerreau's Scat shines through.

This second album by Al Jarreau must be considered one of his best; along with his own compositions, there are some covers, such as "Your song" (Elton John) or the brasilian standard "Aqua de beber", both in two wonderful versions; "Fire and rain" in another cover (James Taylor), and it is a masterwork. This album is strongly suggested to everyone who wants to discover Al Jarreau's jazz side.

Al Jarreau shines phenomenally with the beautiful arrangements on this project. ESPECIALLY BEAUTIFUL IS "GLOW". Make sure that you are NOT DISTURBED as you listen to "GLOW" with your headphones on. You'll find yourself asking yourself toward the end of the song..."WHAT DIMENSION or WORLD WAS HE IN WHEN HE RECORDED THIS SONG?"

My father passed away in August of 2010. He LOVED Al Jarreau. When this c.d. arrived, I listened to it once..and thought his music reminds me of my father! Then, I let my mother borrow it. She said, "He reminds me of your daddy!"
I will listen to this c.d. as much as I can (until it's worn out)! Great music from a musical genius! Thanks, Al!

I wish I had more time to write a longer, more detailed review. I don't. But I can definitely say it is great. Another great Jarreau CD you should have.
