Editorial Reviews

2012 release, the sixth album from the acclaimed guitarist. King is known for her percussive and jazz-tinged melodies, energetic live shows, use of multiple tunings on acoustic and lap steel guitar, and her diverse range in different genres.

What a great album. Just like some of the other reviewers, I heard the snippets on NPR during my morning commute and was so impressed (I get goose bumps when I am impressed) that I actually had to park, get to my phone and make my first Amazon app purchase ever.

Now this album is all instrumental so don't expect to hear Kaki's voice but gosh, she can play guitar for sure. The mood on the majority of these tracks is very Westerny and if Sergio Leone was still around, he would have probably contacted her for the score of his next movie. I mean, you can see Lee Van Cliff and Clint Eastwood having an argument in the middle of the main street, ready to exchange some lead.

Great album... we need more of those! Keep'em coming Mrs. King.

Update on 10/25: Okay so I guess I went a bit overboard on my review here above. Not all tracks are westerny... some are more jazzy / easy listening and just as awesome... I guess I was so impressed with the "Cargo Cult" track with its snare and riding rhythm that I assumed the whole album was like that... so there, I stand happily corrected.

This new release is great.

Like Kaki's early albums, it's guitar focused and instrumental, but like her later albums it features lush production with backing instruments. The sounds are less percussive than her early albums, featuring a good mix of sweeping melodies, downbeat post-rock electric guitar, and some world music influences.

I had never heard of Kaki before yesterday. She was interviewed on NPR and they played a bit of her music. It sounded amazing, so I decided to get the album. It's great, it's one of those you can listen to all the way through.

This is one of Kaki King's finest albums, arguably her best work ever. Perfect for those who love to explore the possibilities of creative acoustic guitar music. I absolutely recommend this album to anyone. I love it. Highlights include the opening track, Great Round Burn, with the exciting string melodies intertwining nicely with Kaki's playing, the frenetic out-of-nowhere celtic tune King Pizel, and the Phantom Carriage-esque The Fire Eater, for its absolutely over-the-top guitar technique and rather halloween-y sound. Honorable mentions also go out to Fences, a beautiful tune written on a miniature twelve-string, giving it a somewhat ethereal sound, and Bowen Island, for its distinct, Asian influenced co-tar sound. Fans of Kaki King, or of great guitar music in general, will surely appreciate this album, the first of her own that King has ever endorsed with any true level of excitement. Give it a listen, and you'll see why!

Lovely instrumental guitar work. Classic Kaki King style, less words more guitar. Goes nicely with Charlie Hunter and Steve Kimock

Some of Mrs. King's best work to date, and some of the most creative music to come from our generation.

Glow by Kaki King is an incredible album. She's returned to what I love most about her, which is impressive, guitar driven songs. A must buy!

Just a beautiful album filled with unique sounds. Each song is a part of an elaborate tapestry. It's a great album to crank up in the car as you drive.
