A new meaning of Orfeo,
By A Customer
This review is from: Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice (1762 version) /Jacobs * Kweksilber * Falewicz * Collegium Vocale * La Petite Bande * S Kuijken (Audio CD)
After listening to this performance, you will surely feel that you had never experienced an Orpheus like this one. It is as if the Gluck-Calzabigi opus had acquired a new meaning upon you. Rene Jacobs, now a successful conductor and baroque specialist, is a most communicative and precise Orpheus (although Ragin for Gardiner is more emotional). The libretto is gorgeous, with facsimile prints of the texts. And the Kuijken are again succesful in their "original" approach. I like Gardiner's but this is my first choice overall for Gluck's most popular opera. Now I wish I can see David Daniels in the main role next season.

the first "period" performance on record,
This review is from: Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice (1762 version) /Jacobs * Kweksilber * Falewicz * Collegium Vocale * La Petite Bande * S Kuijken (Audio CD)
I believe this was the first recording of the Vienna 1762 Orfeo (i.e. Italian text and alto Orfeo) with period instruments. This is a lovely performance throughout : Jacobs does a brilliant job and Kweksilber makes a very involved Euridice. Go for this one, or alternatively, for Michael Chance (Vivarte)... None of the French "Berlioz revisited" versions recordings existing so far are that good.
