I am happy to report just ONE more entry into the "traditional" stagings of Gluck operas on commercially available video, and the ONLY traditional staging I know of for the French version of Orphee (and note the French version is an actual version, not simply a translation). This 1961 Canadian TV production has some major problems with audio, but with that caveat, it is a meltingly beautiful production. And for those who would like to hear Orpheo taken by a tenor, here you can do so with the composer's blessing, as it was one of Gluck's several arrangements of the score. And I can think of no tenor more suited for the part than the great Leopold Simoneau.

The B&W video is as decent as can be expected for a TV recording from 1961. The audio portion has deteriorated in places (or at least, I hope it wasn't like this when new). From a few minutes after the beginning of the opera up until about the arrival of Orphee in Hades, there is a gravelly distortion in the audio which is quite hard to endure. I wouldn't have been able to recommend this DVD in any sense if the distortion had been through the entire production. But miraculously and thankfully, it goes away about the time of the Dance of the Furies. There are a few spots where it seems to be making a comeback, most notably after the aria Je perdu Eurydice (i.e. Che faro senza Euridice), but by and large it is only the first third of the tape.

There are a few other items to mention. First, the performance is sung live and not lip-synched, praise Heaven. Second, there are subtitles in several languages (including subtitles off), always a welcome touch. And finally, I will note there is a voice-over narrator at certain places such as at the beginning and on act changes.

Simoneau and Pierrette Alarie were great artists of the XXth century. This CD preserves a television version produced by Radio Canada in 1961 of Gluck's Orphée et Eurydice. It is a precious historic document.
