the name for the series of the compilations is a great idea. [for those who don't know... not that i am posh; glücklich in german=happy]. "glücklich III" features cheering fusion of dance jazz of any dimension. so there is a strong brazilian rythm plus extremly spacey music. it is just a mix of sounds and noises that is ideal for any dancefloors, at any place on this universe.

The Glücklich series was organized and done by Rainer Trüby on the Compost label out of Germany. It spans 5 volumes and when I last asked a little over a year ago, the Compost folks said there were no plans to release another one. What's fascinating is how the series changed. It started off with some pretty good obscure and older Brazilian influenced tracks/fusion out of Europe. The vibe was consistent through-out and that carried on into volume two, which very closely mirrored volume 1. Volumes 4 and 5 had a bit more of a recent flavour to it - and by recent I mean to reference the time frame those compilations came out - 2000, 2002 and the artists from around then. Volume three was the first in that forum of the later two, melding styles.

To me it was a bit of a bumpy road but still a terrific release. It starts out pretty cool with Pathless's "Goddess", with a wonderful build-up that lays down the mood of the album. That's followed up by a song that would later become a huge success, Da Lata's "Pra Manha", featuring the spirited vocals of Lilliana Chachian. Next up is Trüby Trio's own "Prima Vera", a song that's truly in the mold of their songs from around then - 99-2000. It has signatures of "Carajillo" all over it, along with a reminiscent feel that's similar to Minus-8's work. You have a pretty kickin' samba by Jean-Claude Kerinec, a classic cut from back in 82... one of the most exciting Brazilian national teams of all time played in that cup... but I digress. Other key cuts on this one to me were Tom & Joyce's "Vai Minha Tristeza", given a remix by the soulful Mr. Bob Sinclair tapping into tropical roots and Evaldo Montenoo's "Chili Con Carne", another older track from back in the 70s. Boozoo Bajou's "Night over Manaus" is also featured here - before it suffered from some serious over-exposure on comps from their own label and several others through the early part of the 2000's.

All in all, I liked this release. What you always got with Glücklich were some pretty killer exclusive tracks and this one was a bit light with 2 of them. But it was the first of the series to really start to feature some more *recent* acts in the then growing nu-Brasil/Brazilian influence electornic music category of the time. Rainer Trüby was masterful with these in many ways, most notably that he captures the mood perfectly in the songs he selects for the Glücklich series'. However this isn't to say that the cd was without fault - I wasn't the biggest fan of Cosmo Vitelli's track and in general strength, I think the last two Glücklich's and the first one rate above it. Regardless, if you do like this one and want to see a few comps from that time frame, check out Brazilectro vol 1, Spirit of Brazil (double disc), ESL's "Jet Society", "Beak & Bossa vol II" and "Bossa tres... Jazz When Brazil Meets the World".

Probably the most consistent in the series. This album was great at showcasing modern nuggets with a couple of oldies for points of reference. And while a plethora of Brazilian compilations came out to bank as much money off the genre, this series is one of the few that do properly. While there are two tracks that are shared with the Guidance "Mundial Muzique" compilation each of the two tracks respectively fits. Guidance had a broad Pan-Latin focus while this is strictly Brazilian. Highlights include Da Lata's then-"Songs From the Tin" teaser single "Pra Manha", Boozoo Bajou's "Night Over Manaus", Tab Two, Evaldo Montenovo. Aw hell!! The Compost label is one of the most innovative labels to come out in years and push fusion recordings!The whole thing is the bomb!! Just buy it!!!
