This is the fifth installment of the high quality, pretty famous yet not as commercialized Glucklich series. It is on the ever growing Compost Label, which serves as home to some pretty big nu-jazz, new bossa, new beats/breaks artists like Jazzanova, Beanfield, Kyoto Jazz Massive and etc. I suppose you could even tie Koop into them, if you consider their link with Jazzanova-compost.

The Glucklich series is done by Rainer Truby, formerly of the group "A Forest Mighty BLack" and "Truby Trio". The first Glucklich saw older bossa tracks from the 70's, 80's. THe second one was a continuation of that one. The Third featured more of the new sounds, and the fourth one was, at that time, one of my favorites with quite a few rare gems on it.

This one, the fifth, installment doesn't disappoint either. In typical fashion, Rainer Truby takes the genre to a new level with fresh tracks and, what really distinguishes this from other "new Bossa" cds from Schema or SPV - the un-released tracks are usually always quality. This Glucklich is different from the other four in that it sort of combines all of the styles from the previous. Old and new. The artists reflect that: Jorge Ben and Os Ipanemas are featured as are some of the "new" DJ's like Racoon and Muro.

The artists as a whole are very impressive. NIcola Conte, R.E.Q., Montefiori Cockain, Rachael Calladine, and perhaps AMerica's first exposure to the new cd by Nicola Conte titled Nicola Conte Apresenta Rosalia De Souza.

The Gems on this cd, IMO, is the Jorge Ben track, the Les Gammas track Outra Vida remixed (btw, Nina Miranda of Smoke City is on vocals, and this remix is WAY better than the original) and the track by Wagon Cookin titled "Lua".

Pick this up! It's not like the Brazilectro's, Break N Bossa's. This has a unique, distinct flavor and touch to it. Well made and terrificly compiled and the artists are class. One disc.

I was visiting Chicago checking out the releases at a favorite underground record shop where I bought this excellent compilation. I asked one of the salespeople for a decent collection of Brazilian jazz, and she played the fifth volume of the "Glucklich" series. I've never even heard of this collection, but I was willing to give it a spur-of-the-moment chance. After just a couple tracks, I fell in love and bought the CD right there on the spot. It was that easy. The grooves on this set are a mix of old school jams and (mostly) new vocal tracks that can really set the tone for a relaxing afternoon. It's a nice mix of bossa nova and Brazilian jazz with standouts like the Blissom remix of Rise Ashen's "Torn," Montefiori Cocktail's innovative re-working of Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman" and the 1970s cut "Agua De Beber" by Aquarius Y Luiz Antonio. Rainer Truby really did a good job picking the right tracks for this CD, which is chillout bliss for those looking to add an interesting twist to their music collection. Definitely recommended.

Vinyl - the perfect format to enjoy this selection of songs on. Compost Records is known for putting out great albums, especially 12" and remixes. The Glucklich series is no exception. Rainer Truby is the head of this highly successful franchise that as of today, spans 5 volumes and has evolved greatly since Glucklich vol 1 was released over 10 years ago (1994)!

Volume 5 was IMO the strongest and most consistent of them all. The mood was set fantastically from the first track, Racoon's "Eh Luande" with a dark remix, a track that greatly improved on the initial release from 2000. Rise Ashen follows up with a steady remix to "Torn", a song with hints of deep sax and effects. Japan's own Muro kicks in with "Bohemian", remixed. The Glucklich series always has a hint of the old school and besides Far Out Record's "Os Ipanemas" with their seductive "Icarai", you've also got a Jorge Ben classic - the original "Comanche". The cool, dark loungish and 70's vibe continues on with R.E.Q.'s Casa Forte and an exclusive cut by Nu Tropic, "Moonlight" - the bossa in that one giving you a bit of a more light-hearted tone to the music. But the real gem on this cd was by far, Wagon Cookin's "Lua" - a psycodelic track with an INCREDIBLE feel and sound. It too is an exclusive cut and was never released on either of Wagon Cookin's own cd's. BUT BUT BUT... it is also not on this VINYL version so please take notice, you have to check out the EP teaser that came out. Not to be outdone or forgotten are the other fantastic tracks, particularly Eddy & Dus's remix to Les Gammas/Nina Miranda "Outra Vida" or Rosalia De Souza's rendition of "Fica Mal Com Deus"

This album is a MUST have. Although it was originally released back in the fall of 2002, I think this is one that'll withstand the test of time. 2002 in general was a GREAT year for Nu-Brazil comps and artists - Glucklich 5 was the exclamation point to them all. If you dig this, check out 2002's other highlights: Break & Bossa 5, Brazilectro 4, Bossa Mundo 2, Brazilian Love Affair III and Nu Bossa Cafe. Actually, Nu Bossa Cafe could almost be a companion piece to Glucklich 5, thanks to it's eerily similar vibe & consistency - and absolutely no carryover on it other than Precyz's remake to Comanche.
