4.0 out of 5 stars Strong, but not the strongest of the Franchise, November 14, 2003
This review is from: Glucklich 2 (Audio CD)
This is the second edition of the Glucklich series which, as of today, ranges five volumes. The series started out in 1994 actually, and this one came out in 96'. And what you get in volumn two is pretty much a carry-over of what may not have made it onto volumn one; the cuts are from the 70's, 80's like the first. Well, with the exception of "Tante Nelly" which does have a striking resemblence to "Onkel Joe".

Of the five, this one wasn't my favorite, but it wasn't the weakest either (I reserve that to volumn 3). I'd like to say that the best thing to do would be to treat this one as it's own listening experience, but the similarity in style makes this tough to do. You have more vocals in this one, but the tracks didn't grab me as much as the tracks did in the first. What didn't get me was the samba on some cuts that were just a little too... blah, actually. But on the positive, you're guaranteed some of the rarest of cuts out there and Second Direction's feature, "Tante Nelly", "Vera Cruz", "Nil", and even "Schoch-Schach" is a solid wind-down for the 9 track release. If there's one thing this cd will do is bring about nostalgia.

In the end, I would definitely recommend it. If you're a collector of Rainer Truby's work and have the rest of the Glucklich comps, you will certainly want this to finish the collection provided you have the other four. It was after this one that the more **new** tracks were added on like Da Lata, Racoon, Minus 8, Buscemi, etc. for the rest of the series. Glucklich 5 has a mix of old and new, but isn't focused on German Jazz - it has old school Brazil jazz too. If you can, I'd probably recommend this one on vinyl.
