Hi Gang.., look.., I once owned a small bookstore.., and you wouldn't believe the stuff people would bring in to trade, or sell. I'm a retired Special Forces Master Sergeant and never worried about a weight situation until I turned 52..!! Prior to that I had known about the Air Force Diet, The Drinking Man's Diet, and the Candian RX-2 Plan..!! Believe me.., all one...

I had to write this review to counter the other review - this is a "pocket guide" - a small book packed with the information needed to understand glycemic index and what it means in your everyday diet. This book was never meant to be a complete guide but does offer an easy to understand review of glycemic index, a weekly meal plan, substitutes to normally consumed foods, snacks and snacking tips and a small table of GI values. I found it amazingly complete and very informative for the price - a good place to start!!

Believe me.., all one needs is the orginal Dr. Bob Atkins diet which is, smiply NO CARBS the first 2 weeks, than add in a few for the next 7-8 weeks until you reach your own max totalance level. Mine was around 35-40 grams a day. Now, true.., for the first week it's a little hell in attitute, and strenght, but right after that one really starts to feel great, "cleaned out", and stronger. Then, and only then would I advise starting a serious excerise program, but excerise you must..!! That where Jon Gabriel's "method" is of the most help. So please forget these confusing thick books, with scales, and table. JUST DO the old school Atkins plan (stick to it) for at least 3 weeks. Folks, this is from my heart.., and I'm 70 years old now.., and still going strong.!!

I have used this book in conjuction with the SouthBeach Diet and have lost 40 pounds. I have found that when I eat foods with a lower gycemic index I feel better and I don't get the wild ups and downs in my blood sugar which were causing the tendency to binge eat.

I no longer feel that I have to "diet" and white knuckle my way thin, but have truely made a lifestyle change that is changing my life. Nor do I have to be 100% perfect all the time to still see results. Also, no more measuring, or counting or obsessing about foods. It's very freeing.

I was recently diagnosed as having hypoglycemia. My physician recommeded reading some books on this subject and scheduling an appointment with a nutritionist. She had recommeded this book along with hypoglycemia for dummies. These two books have given me options as far as what I should be eating to maintain my glucose levels during the course of my day as well as giving me options as no food is "off limits". If you're in a similar situation or even just want to lose weight, without starvation, this is the book!

I'd hoped this book would help me make good choices with foods on a low to med carb diet. However, there are big gaps in the foods it lists and is generally pretty useless.
