Editorial Reviews

From AudioFile

Respected writer and poet Joseph Bruchac is also a well-known Native American storyteller. Careful, thoughtful attention to the storytelling experience is characteristic of his style. GLUSKABE STORIES presents traditional Abenaki tales that were intended to teach about life, values and man's relationship in the web of life. Bruchac begins each story about GluskabeÐthe storyteller who created himself from dust brushed from the Creator's handsÐwith a few sentences in the Native tongue. Speaking in a gentle but commanding voice, he continues in English. The lyrical, rhythmical quality of his voice rolls with the fluidity and motion of the Native language. Songs, chants and drumming enhance the experience of the story. R.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

This review is from: Gluskabe Stories (Audio Cassette)
At the Opening Ceremony for the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, DC, one of the First Nations people recommended that I look up Joseph Bruchac's stories to reclaim some of my own lost heritage. Since then, I have GREATLY enjoyed the tape of Gluskabe Stories, as well as several books and other tapes by Mr. Bruchac. Today I am buying a second copy of Gluskabe Stories as a gift.

I hadn't realized how much Mr. Bruchac's stories had impacted me until this experience on a tour bus: As people were getting tired of singing songs to pass the time, suddenly the story about Gluskabe and the Baby popped into my head. Even though I had never told a story to a group before, and even though I had only listened to the tape twice, I told the story and received many rounds of applause for which I sincerely thank Mr. Bruchac. It is a beautiful story and he is clearly a superb teacher to have taught me while I didn't realize he was teaching me.

I've heard that Mr. Bruchac can be found at the Ndakinna Education Center in Greenfield Center, NY (near Albany, NY, which is reachable on Southwest Airlines and by Amtrak among other options). Later this year, I hope to attend a workshop and meet him. :)
