The Bible on the Gluten Free Diet,
This review is from: Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Successfully following a gluten-free (GF) diet involves much more than just avoiding gluten. It is about getting optimal nutrition from healthful foods. And it is not all about GF breads and cookies, it's about eating a bounty of whole foods and incorporating healthful whole GF grains, using them in ways that maximize their nutritional benefits.
As a registered dietitian, I refer to Gluten Free Diet on a regular basis; I trust that the information is research-based, backed with science, and 100% reliable. It is the number-one resource on GF diets / GF living for myself and for my clients. Shelley Case, a registered dietitian who herself follows the GF diet, is an international expert on celiac disease and the GF diet. The book not only covers the GF diet in detail, but common medical questions and issues that arise among folks suffering from celiac disease, or wondering if they might have it. From everyday concerns to more remote issues, all topics are covered in an easy-to-understand prose, complete with useful tables, appendices, and easy recipes. The book gets updated regularly, so is up to speed on the more controversial issues such as oats (are they GF or not?), hidden sources of gluten in the diet, cross-contamination issues, limiting nutrients and where to find them, whether a "dedicated facility" is important or not and other labeling issues, and great resources for anyone needing support and information on going GF. One of the best sections of the book is Case's well-researched list of GF manufacturers/brands, bakeries, stores, distributors, and web-sites. If you've been diagnosed with celiac disease or want to follow a gluten-free diet for any other reason, this is the only book you'll need.

I purchased this book for my daughter, who may be gluten intolerant. It answered ALL the questions that the local doctors were unable to. I highly recommend this to anyone who may be gluten intolerant. Great resource book!!

I purchased this book because of the 5-star rating it received and was highly disappointed. Yes, it is a comprehensive resourse guide, but it is aimed at other registered dieticians or medical professionals, not the average person looking for answers or help with living gluten-free. The sections are not straightforward and are difficult to follow. With the exception of the first few pages on what items do or do not contain gluten, I came away no more educated on the subject than I was before buying this book.

After 25 years working with mesquite (Prosopis spp) as a university researcher, in cooperation with other partners, we began to produce and import mesquite flour into the USA. Very shortly after I got a call from Shelley Case with requests for information about nutritional quality. She requested scientific journal articles going back to the early 80s with all information about mesquite. She called all domestic and international suppliers for information on their products. She prepared an excel spreadsheet to look for glaring differences among the nutritional information. Following this exhaustive literature search and analyses, she summarized the work for her book. The two things that come to my mind when I think of this book are attention to detail and scholarship. One can be sure the data is all inclusive, up to date and correct.

RE: GLUTEN-FREE DIET, A Comprehensive Resource Guide by Shelley Case, B.SC. RD. Shelley Case's book is THE BEST resource for people who need a gluten-free diet. Although there are few absolutes in terms of a gluten-free diet, registered dietitian Shelley gives us the most accurately researched information on ingredients and other details. There's no point avoiding an ingredient that we really don't have to worry about. You need to know about meal planning, shopping guidelines, nutrition, cross contamination, tips for eating out, GF labeling regulations, & directory of GF specialty vendors and GF products. This book should be one of the first GF reference books you buy.

The most well researched and written book on the gluten-free diet available, period.,
This review is from: Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition (Perfect Paperback)
When I was diagnosed with Celiac in early 2006, I could not wait until the third edition of this book came out. I could not afford the $100 someone was asking for the used version - there were not any new ones and it was that sought after! I could not have made it through my first gluten-free year without Shelley's guide. It cheered me up just looking at all the companies and bakeries that made gluten free food for us back then.
With the newest edition of Shelley's book, there are even more great products, bakeries and websites to explore AND the ingredient infomation is accurate - no outdated 20 year old myths that are sadly still floating around on the internet. We have to work hard to avoid gluten, one should not be taking advice about the diet from anyone who is not an actual EXPERT on the subject. Shelley Case is the real McCoy! I was recently diagnosed with Celiac Disease. My doctor simply said you must follow a gluten free diet and referred me to a Registered Dietitian who handed me a bunch of print outs that really didn't offer me a whole lot of needed information.
Then I got obsessed. The info on CD from the 27 different books I have purchased so far is as varied as the colors on a color wheel. Everyone has their own take on how to successfully eat gluten free. I didn't want to eat cupcakes, pies and cookies for every meal. Most books on the market are for baking and don't have in depth nutrition info and I wanted nutrition. I somehow came across this book and holy cow! Changed my life! Mrs. Case's book is a MUST have. I think all doctors, dietitians, nutritionists, friends, family and everyone that deals with, lives with, or cooks for someone with Celiac Disease should own this book AND read it. It's packed with much needed information to finally achieve good health. Included in this book are pages, yes PAGES of info on dietary reference intakes (DRI's) of various nutrients like iron, folate, vitamin b12 etc in various food sources such as flours, starches, meats, beans, nuts, fruits and vegetables. Each nutrient is prefaced with a section that lists how much an infant, child, male, female, even pregnancy and lactation is covered. You walk away from this book with enough confidence to create a menu, with an abundance of choices, that works for you and your family and you WILL get your health back on track. Thanks Mrs. Case!!

This book is exactly as advertised. It IS the most comprehensive resource guide on the subject. However, as my first gluten-free book, the layout & information was a little overwhelming for me.

This book is filled with the most current, most accurate information available today. Shelley is a highly respected Dietition with extensive knowledge and understanding of the gluten free diet. I highly respect her and her direct and active involvement in a number of Natl. celiac groups. Both her book, and public appearance/presentation are phenomenal! Her education comes thru hard and clear and concise with excellent guidance as to how to best navigate your way thru the nutrition/ or lack thereof, with regard to Celaic Disease. I have been living gluten free for 14 years and have always struggled with finding good, nutritional information to make the most of my gluten free lifestyle. Even after 14 years, there is so much to learn inside this book, you will go back time and time again to reference it. We all know the "short list" of gluten containing ingredients, but Shelley includes the "long list" as well with the less common gluten containing ingredients which is necessary when following a strict, 100% gluten free diet. It is all in there! The format is easy to follow as well as to refer back to at a later date for any particular need. When an individual needs to live gluten free, it is important to have a well educated Registered Dietition to assist in maximizing your nutritional needs for good health and well being. As Celiacs, we find them hard to come by! It is important for this to be a specialty or passion of theirs and Shelley's book is the closest thing I have had to a personal dietition to help me maximize my health. I have done it on my own for these 14 years and having this resource many years ago could have helped me tremendously, and possibly helped me avoid some of the pitfalls I experience from this malabsorption disease. It fills the gap with needed vitamins and minerals our (those of us unable to ingest gluten) bodies are lacking, and practical ways to get them into our diets. This book is an excellent tool for newly diagnosed, old timers, dietitions, and physicians alike. I trust that this book will be beneficial to you, or someone you love who is gluten free, in many ways.
Blessings,and good health, Lynn

This review is from: Gluten-Free Diet: A Comprehensive Resource Guide- Expanded and Revised Edition (Perfect Paperback)
Shelley Case is one of the best, if not the best, expert on the gluten free diet in the U.S. and Canada. Shelley does extensive research on her books, is well-known in the celiac circles and is a sought-after speaker in the U.S., Canada and around the world on celiac disease and the gluten free diet. Her new book has expanded information from her first book that makes it the book that should be in everyone's library who has celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or is on the gluten free diet for any reason. It's all the book you need to live on a healthy gluten free diet. It definitely deserves 5 stars. Betty Barfield/TX
