If you like good food, but can't eat wheat or dairy, this book is an absolute must. I use it all the time - even my non-allergic friends enjoy the recipes they are so good

1.0 out of 5 stars A total con
This book is a con. Not all the recipes are actually gluten- and dairy free (as the title clearly suggests), thus around 50% of the recipes are unusable! Also, 70% of the recipes in the book are for desserts requring, of course, masses of sugar!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Authors comment, August 21, 2003
This review is from: Gluten, Wheat, and Dairy Free Cookbook (Paperback)
In reply to the review from the reader from the Netherlands:

All of the recipes are wheat free and most are also gluten and dairy free

There are about 25 recipes (from over 220) that are indicated as being wheat, rather than gluten free, but these can easily be adapted to gluten free by changing the type of flour or pasta used. About 15 recipes contain dairy products

Less than 35% of the recipes in the book are for warm or cold desserts, most of which are recipes that people on gluten, wheat or dairy free diets could not normally eat

Here are three press reviews:

The Sunday Times Magazine
"A cookbook with such mouthwatering wheat-, dairy- and gluten-free recipes, that your dinner guests will never know the difference."

The Washington Times
"A wonderful addition to any cook's bookshelf... I recommend them to the allergic and non-allergic alike."

The Irish Times
"If your food allergy is to gluten, wheat or dairy products... this cookbook may just change your life."

1.0 out of 5 stars The TITLE is NOT ACCURATE!, July 16, 2011
This review is from: Gluten, Wheat, and Dairy Free Cookbook (Paperback)
Ordinarily I will not review a cookbook I have not purchased and used. However, as a person who cannot have dairy products or gluten--and who is still struggling with the medical expenses and increased grocery costs of this diagnosis--I think it is important for anyone considering this book to realize that NOT ALL of the recipes in the book are gluten free and not all are dairy free. The title and the book cover are misleading. At this stage I want to purchase ONE BOOK I can trust. A book I can go to and not have one more "nope, can't have that" thrown in my face. This book is not that book, at least not right now. Based on not only the negative review below but also the author's own admissions (also below), you will get recipes that will require you to substitute a gluten free flour for the flour listed in the recipe--and we all know that all GF flours do not work equally in every "normal" recipe. In addition, some recipes may not be usable because of ingredients containing dairy (again, substitutes do not always yield a quality result). If the book were being given away or had an accurate title, it would not be an issue to me that all recipes were not useful to a person on a restricted diet. It IS a problem when the title leads me to pay for a book at a time when my funds are limited, and I end up paying for recipes that I either cannot use or that require the time and expense involved to experiment to achieve decent results. Perhaps in a year or two when I have become more savvy about substitutions and less raw about all the foods I can no longer have, this book's false title will not irritate so much. For right now, this really angers me--and it is the reason I've decided to never purchase a cookbook online that doesn't allow a preview or if I have not examined the book elsewhere. Further, the author's attitude troubles me even more.

One of the five-star reviews below is actually a five-star rebuttal from the author who, instead of attaching a comment to the review of a customer who was angry about purchasing this book, decided to give herself five stars and tell the customer to just substitute gluten free flours for the recipes that aren't gluten free, etc. (basically creating a self-promotion). Instead of saying "I'm sorry the title mislead you into spending money on my book," she basically says "other people--who had it given to them for free to review--liked it; you just need to suck it up." That is why I decided a 1 star (only because zero isn't possible) to balance the author's rating of her own work is only fair.
