Editorial Reviews

Nonesuch releases Audra McDonald's first solo album in seven years Go Back Home. After four seasons spent in Los Angeles playing Dr. Naomi Bennett on ABC's hit medical drama Private Practice, the acclaimed singer and actress returned to New York and Broadway last year, winning her record-tying fifth Tony Award for her role in The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess. With Go Back Home, the Grammy Award-winning soprano, whose voice Stephen Sondheim has hailed as "one of the glories of the American theater," makes her highly anticipated return to recording, presenting her most personal album to date.

Many of the selections on Go Back Home are by composers with whom McDonald has long been associated (Guettel, LaChiusa, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Sondheim, among others), while some songs, including the Kander and Ebb title track, are by names that are relatively new to her repertoire. In addition, McDonald continues her tradition of championing works by an emerging generation of composers, represented on this recording by Adam Gwon, Heisler and Goldrich, and Will Reynolds (complete track list on next page). The album was produced by Doug Petty, who also produced McDonald's 2006 release Build a Bridge; musical director Andy Einhorn conducted the ensemble.

Audra McDonald's new album "Go Back Home" is complete and utter perfection. The Dietrich/LaChiusa "ABC's" MUST BE PRODUCED IMMEDIATELY (the songs "Virtue" and "Married Love" are from its wonderful score). Also thrilling to hear a new orchestration (by GENIUS Bruce Coughlin) of Adam Guettel's "Migratory V". I will NOT let my insane jealousy of Andy Einhorn stop me from singing his praises as an amazing musical director of conductor. Overall, an astonishing and brilliant success. Who expected anything less?

I love it when voices (and careers) can't be pigeon-holed. What Ms McDonald teaches our children and grandchildren is that a career, a LIFE, can investigate and excel on many different paths and that we should not hesitate to leap into and embrace new opportunities. "Go Back Home" brilliantly assures one of the satisfaction, growth, and maturity and sheer good fun and appreciation of the art of one's life when one "goes back home." You can go home again and appreciate it all the more.

@AudraEqualityMc has much to teach her appreciative audiences as her burnished golden voice takes the time to really explain to us the lyrics of the songs she chose for this album. She could sing Sycorax in Jeremy Sams's and Phelim McDermott's MetOpera "Enchanted Island" AND Nellie Forbush in "South Pacific" all in one season.

Thank you for returning to New York, Ms McDonald. Will cross my fingers that Adam Guettel is creating a new musical for you and that Peter Gelb invites you to sing any role you wish on the Met stage.

This is one of my favourite albums in a very long time. Every moment is lovingly crafted, mixed and produced. Audra sounds divine and some of the songs touched my heart deeply.

Some highlights:

Go Back Home: Audra knocks it out of the park with this gorgeous song from Kander/Ebb's last musical, The Scottsboro Boys. Hopeful, yearning, sweet, funny and gentle.
The Glamorous Life: Audra produces some of her most stunning songs pared with perfect acting
Baltimore: Hilarious- perfect storytelling. She brings the house down
Migratory V: Adam Guettel's deeply moving song comes to life as an hommage to Audra's late father. Tearjerker
I'll Be Here: The highlight of the entire album. I listen to this heart stopping song over and over. The storytelling will break your heart.

but everything else is also perfect.....do yourself a favour and pick up!

I am a great Audra McDonald fan, and this is her best solo CD. One of the great things about her (besides her fantastic talent) is that she is on a mission to introduce us to new material rather than rely on safe old standards. A couple of examples from this CD are the title track, "Some Days," and of course "I'll be Here," which is worth the price of the CD by itself, though I have a friend who says he fast-forwards when it comes on because it's too intense to listen to. Even old standards such as "Edelweiss" and "Make Someone Happy" seem new when she sings them. In my opinion McDonald has only one rival when it comes to this type of music--Streisand. That being said, I prefer McDonald. When Babs sings, you hear Streisand. When McDonald sings, you hear the story that the composer and the lyricist wanted to tell.

Audra McDonald's fantastic new album, Go Back Home is a liquid flowing river of soft and soaring vocals in flight, taking the listener on an audio journey. With lush orchestration and piano, these songs sail flawlessly from the wonderful talent of Audra's expansive enriching voice. Infusing broadway songs with a couple American standards, her phrasing alone is amazing on every note, so many great lyrics to carry. I love the music on this album as well, it compliments her and nothing is over produced. She pulls you into each story that thrives within each song, some very upbeat and others dream like. Each song has its own character and vocal tone. Most of these songs I had never heard before myself but the more I listen they are continuing to grow on me. Highlight tracks include Go Back Home, First You Dream, I'll Be Here, Some Days, and Edelweiss. Catch her live at lincoln center concert on PBS, it made me quickly run to amazon to purchase the album.

I love anything Audra sings because of the way she sings it but I particularly like this mix of familiar and less well known songs. The new songs give us a chance for a great appraisal because they are performed so well. Some favorites? Migratory V, Some Days and the glorious reworking of Stephen Sondheim's The Glamorous Life. You won't regret this purchase. I was a little bit suspect when I read it included Edelweiss - not a favorite song of mine. But she made it her own and now I love it as if it were brand new.

I heard Audra on the TV in the Sound of Music and was impressed by her voice, I picked the wrong CD, it is more stage singing/recital and I prefer her voice singing actual songs.

It's ok. I like many of her other songs better and wished they were on this recording. Overall, she just sounded kind of stressed to me. I'll pay more attention to the song list next time.
