Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

With passion and unflinching honesty, renowned tattoo artist and New York Times bestselling author Kat Von D chronicles her journey to develop greater personal strength by taking bigger risks in life, love, and her art in this stunning illustrated book.

In Go Big or Go Home, her most intensely personal work yet, Kat Von D raises the expository and tattoo bar as she writes candidly about her greatest desires, fears, successes, and failures, and shares how she has dealt with them—for better or worse. In seven thematic essays, she addresses issues close to her heart—individuality, strength, creativity, independence, presence, wisdom, and altruism—and draws on engaging and inspiring stories from her own life and those of her clients throughout each section.

Aligned with this focus on risk taking, making bold moves, and taking responsibility for her actions is Kat's decision to create only large-scale tattoos especially for this book. Each tattoo represents a two-fold commitment: one from Kat as an artist. and the other from the client, for whom the tattoo almost always represents a significant event or a visible manifestation of his or her evolving inner self.

Filled with Kat's sketches, handwriting, and specially commissioned photographs of tattoos—both in process and complete—Go Big or Go Home features a range of astounding work both on regular citizens and the many celebrities who seek her out, including songwriter Linda Perry, Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong, actor Ewan MacGregor, rapper Game, and comedian Bobcat Goldthwait.

Above all, this special book captures the candor, compassion, and enormous talent of an artist beloved by millions worldwide.

I own author, Kat Von D's, excellent, very personal, first Book "High Voltage", with the introduction from her then boyfriend, Nikki Sixx, from Motely Crue, so I couldn't wait for this one to come out...That book was very raw, personal and came straight from the heart.....Well, this novel, "Go Big or Go Home", is just as excellent as the first one and is almost like an extended biography....They are "perfect companion pieces", which both sit on my coffee table after I read them, because their brilliant covers alone are like paintings....Everyone that comes into my home, can't help reaching for them to take a look...This novel is just as serious, humorous, emotional and should be thought provoking to everyone..I don't look at Kat Von D, just as the "cool chick" like others...I see a very intelligent woman, who made her childhood dreams become reality....

I admire her for courage, finding her own voice, being beautiful and comfortable in her own skin... She has made it capable for me and other women to finally be free.. I can be who I am, and not hide or worried about being jugde by other people.....For even though I am a professional, I have gorgeous, tattooed arm sleeves....People still stare, but now, it's because of their beauty and colors..Only women in circus shows, or state fairs got tattoos years ago...Now our culture has changed.....So I decided to "Go Big", also.......

I have been a "big fan" of Kat Von D's, since she first appeared on "Miami Ink"....From their she moved onto her own show "LA Ink", and so on... She is an author, artist, plays piano, designer, model, singer and an inspiration...I even own her seductive, scented perfume, "Sinners", that drives my husband crazy when I wear it... I believe anyone with or without tattoos, will enjoy this book....

On first impression, this book is much like Kat Von D herself: just plain cool looking. It's filled with really detailed and impressive photographs, her tattoo work and clients, sketches, art and design. There isn't a single blank page with just words on it. The writing is also surprisingly intruiging and engaging, mixed with insightful stories and anecdotes of life from Kat and her friends/clients. It's like a print copy of her show, actually, only much more in depth and personal.

At its heart, Go Big Or Go Home is a book about how Kat has struggled -but finally found- her freedom from fears, from judgement, and the freedom to be who she knew she wanted to be. It's impossible to not respect that. Who doesn't want to go for what they truly want to do without the stifling fear and judgement that comes with it?
I'll break down the chapters since Amazon doesn't offer a Look Inside option.

Introduction: Discussing her newfound yearning to become a singer and how her fears held her back and what it taught her along the way.

Chapter 1 is "Individuality". Talks about how she found herself unwilling to go for what she wanted or do what made her truly happy. Other stories and photos in this chapter are of Jeffree Star, Greg Siebel, Matt Mauerer, Sara de as Rego, and Bobcat Goldthwait.

Chapter 2 is "Strength". Talks about finding the courage to be yourself despite a world that may have different expectations and breaking through that guilt. Other stories and photos include those of Marya Gullo, Ayesha King, Adrian Gallagos, and Game.

Chapter 3 is "Creativity". Talks about finding and cultivating your creativity.

I heart everything Kat Von D! Her books, including Go Big or Go Home are a visual, emotional and creative feast. I turn to these books when I need creative inspiration, when I need to be reminded I am not alone on the human journey and when I just need a hug. Her honesty and transparency remind all of us that the path to self-actualization and creative fulfillment takes courage and the willingness to be vulnerable and real. Thank you Kat for continuing to inspire!

I received this book tonight and cannot put it down. My first impression of this book is how beautifully it was produced. The photography, hand drawn sketches, illustrations, artwork, and styles of script are very nicely done. This is a book that is rich in visual detail and artistry. Kat Von D.'s writing style is very enjoyable, down to earth, genuine, and engaging. In "Go Big or Go Home: Taking Risks in Life, Love, and Tatooing," she speaks about seven meaningful characteristics; Individuality, Strength, Creativity, Independence, Presence, Wisdom, and Altruism. Each chapter is an essay, much like a journal entry, in which Kat Von D. shares personal experiences and anecdotes from family, friends, and others who have influenced her and exemplified these values. Note, this is not a self-help or "how to" psychology book. Rather, this book is a collection of life moments, lessons, and quotes, set amidst truly beautiful artwork, all of which are inspiring! Kat hopes to share her belief that, "a true self lives deep inside each of us. That self is asking to be set free so it can nurture us-if only we will take a risk and let it." It is a book about freedom, learning to be present, true to who you are, and not letting personal fears stop you from pursuing your passion in life.
