Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Rockabilly pioneer Carl Perkins once described his brand of music as "a country man's song with a black man's rhythm." This may be simplifying matters a bit, but you can decide for yourself after reading Craig Morrison's rockabilly bible, whose title also tips its hat to Perkins. All the major figures are here, including Elvis, Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent, and Jerry Lee Lewis. But rockabilly is a field particularly rich with obscurities and one-trick ponies, and Morrison makes room for them all. If you want to know about the genesis of Malcolm Yelvington's "Drinkin'Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee," or about Sonny Burgess's taste in clothes (all red, to match his guitar and dyed hair), this is the book for you. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Canadian academic and bandleader Morrison evaluates all rockabilly against what could easily be considered the dumb luck of Elvis Presley with that greasy combination of country blues and Sam Phillips's primitive studio wizardry. Unfortunately, the Presley rags-to-riches tale has been told so often it's nearly pointless here. And Morrison's claim that rockabilly became a national craze after Presley signed with RCA in 1956 fails to appreciate that fame and fortune continued to elude such rockabilly heroes and Presley pals as Charlie Feathers and Billy Lee Riley. Rockabilly has always been about local boys (and girls) playing against the odds of Presley's success. Morrison's at his keenest in profiles of the local stars, both true and would-be, of regional scenes that have intermittently thrived since the 1950s, in spite of changing musical fashions. When The Stray Cats did an unlikely star turn in the early 1980s, there was a renewed interest in rockabillly as a style of nearly everything?except music. Old-timers and traditionalists continued to pound out their tunes for the tiniest record labels around. It's too bad Go Cat Go! slights The Flat Duo Jets and '68 Comeback, two current bands truer to the original spirit of rockabilly than either The Stray Cats or The Cramps. Morrison sheds light on many worthy musicians here, but it seems there will always be many more forgotten.

More About the Author

Craig Morrison is a Montreal ethnomusicologist, author, teacher, and musician. He specializes in rock and roll and its roots in blues, jazz, rhythm and blues, country, folk, gospel, and pop. Raised in Victoria BC, Canada, he bought his first guitar in 1966 and played in coffeehouses.

As a teenager, seeing concerts of blues (such as Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee), jazz (Louis Armstrong), and rock (Janis Joplin) led to an interest in music history. Playing in groups provided a deeper appreciation of music styles and he has since performed and recorded extensively with his own bands and backed others, notably rhythm and blues legend Vann "Piano Man" Walls. Two CDs are available on Amazon: Live at the Oscar, and Echoes From the Blue Angel.

For more than a decade, he has been teaching courses at Concordia University in Montreal (where he earned a PhD), on Rock and Roll and its Roots, The Music of the Beatles, and Pop/ Soul and its Roots. Since the early 1970s, he has been teaching private lessons on guitar and piano. Since 1982, he has been interviewing veteran musicians, more than 100 of them, across North America, from the rockabillies of Tennessee and Texas, to the garage, folk rock, and psychedelic pioneers of the West Coast, as well as many seminal blues, r&b, and country players.

All three of Craig Morrison's books are available through Amazon.com: Go Cat Go! Rockabilly Music and Its Makers (University of Illinois Press), American Popular Music: Rock and Roll (Facts On File), and Psychedelic Music in San Francisco: Style, Context, and Evolution (self published). Additionally Morrison has written CD liner notes and numerous articles for the Encyclopedia Britannica, Encyclopedia of the Blues (Routledge), Women and Music in America Since 1900 (Greenwood Press), the Journal of American Folklore, and other publications.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best overviews., August 27, 2000
This review is from: Go Cat Go!: ROCKABILLY MUSIC AND ITS MAKERS (Music in American Life) (Paperback)
Morrison's book is one of the best overviews of Rockabilly History that I've read. There is nothing too indepth here, but this book is not meant to do that. Instead you get the why's and hows of early Rock and Roll, the definition of what makes Rockabilly, rockabilly. You get bio's of the major, and many minor, movers and shakers of the rock and roll movement of the 50's. This book gets your foot in the door and past Elvis into the coloured and varied history of the scene. From here you can search out bio's and records on Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran and The Rock and Roll Trio. A nice appendix included here is a listing of important Rockabilly albums and compilations that one can still find on the shelves. Now that you know the history you know what records to buy to experiance that history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Cats Good!!!, May 6, 2002

This book is without any doubt the best out there. Besides good biographical stories about bands and artists, you get to know a whole lot about the MUSIC rockabilly. This book also covers the cultural and sociological aspects of rockabilly. I've just finnished my major essay at the University in Trondheim (Norway) - studying music - and Morrison's book has helped me a lot. From the 50s, to the revival, and up to the present. Morrison's book covers it all!!!

This review is from: Go Cat Go!: ROCKABILLY MUSIC AND ITS MAKERS (Music in American Life) (Paperback)
I am researching about rock'n'roll, rockabilly and other rhythms of the '50s and '60s. I am enjoying this book very much and it has been very helpful to me, not only because of the loads of info about history, bands, etc. that it contains but also for the suggested reading & listening lists it gives. I strongly recommend it.
