Editorial Reviews

Go Fly A Kite marks the triumphant return of Ben Kweller and the debut release of his label, The Noise Company. From the dynamic electric riff in "Mean To Me," to the closing upbeat declaration of "You Can Count On Me," Go Fly A Kite exhibits Kweller's signature genre-jumping blend of Alt Rock, Piano Ballads and Folk Music. The songwriting on tracks like "Free" and "Full Circle" is relevant and reflective, immersed with unforgettable melody and harmony, lush arrangements, and bittersweet lyrics. Go Fly A Kite is a celebratory offering of the essential Ben Kweller and serves as a career-defining album with the ability to resonate beyond its time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock and Roll February 7, 2012
By Jeff
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I am really enjoying this new Ben Kweller album (it's been playing non-stop in the car.) Both the music and packaging has had a lot of thought go into it (this one is worth getting a physical copy of, in my opinion.) It feels like a rock album put together by someone who is a true rock 'n' roll fan himself. I've enjoyed all of his albums and this one was no let down.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Genius of Ben Kweller February 18, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I have followed Ben Kweller since the Radish days and through each of his solo albums to this most current release, Go Fly A Kite. Barring a minor hiccup with the 'country' album Changing Horses, every release is welcomed into this house like a long lost friend and Go Fly A Kite is no different. In using the term 'no different' this could also apply to the type of album that we have become accustomed to hearing from Ben. He is breaking little new ground here and whilst some may find this a negative, it is warmly celebrated by this listener. I want Ben to keep writing the songs I love to listen to and he has pretty much nailed it again this time.

There are perhaps five songs here which are as good as anything he has done in a very eventful career. Mean to Me, Jealous Girl, Justify Me, The Rainbow and Full Circle. All are outstanding examples of Ben Kweller's songwriting, simple but so effective. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the rest of the songs and the likes of I Miss You and You Can Count on Me might feel slightly aggrieved at missing out on the top 5, but of course this is just my opinion.

At the end of the day if you liked any of the previous Ben Kweller albums you will love this. Everybody is entitled to their opinion but a 2 star review above? Absolutely outrageous.

One of the greatest and most under-rated songwriters of the past 15 years.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty pretty good February 17, 2012
Format:Audio CD
i don't know, different people hear different things in every record.
i can't fathom how anybody could give this 2 stars and i also can't fathom how anybody could listen to Kweller's country album twice, but different strokes, right?
that said, this is really a pretty good album.
it's not great, but then it doesn't seem to aspire to greatness.
just as Lassie can go and save lives and little kids that have fallen in well-and damn, the world needs dogs like that-this record wants to be nothing more than the lovable pup that sits in our lap and licks your face when you get home from work, and you know what? the world needs dogs like that too.
the album goes by pretty quickly and there is really nothing groundbreaking here, but tracks like Jealous Girl and The Rainbow are flat out brilliant. the former hooks harder than J Roberts in Pretty Woman and the latter is as heartfelt as any song this side of Adele.
pick this one up, and if you're into packaging, this one is unique.
it folds out into a giant kite.
ok, it doesn't but it's still pretty keen.
