Book Description

Growing Up Stories: What It's Like to Be a Baby

Children love to hear the stories about what they were like and all the wonderful, amazing, interesting, and funny things they did when they were 1-year-olds. They also have endless questions about the wonderful year they were 1.

Why do 1-year-olds want to talk all the time?
Why do they ask so many questions?

Why do they touch or grab almost everything they can?
Why do they want to open almost everything they can?

Why do most of them still suck their thumbs or fingers?

How do they learn to talk in sentences?

How do they learn to walk up and down stairs -- and run?

Why do they still wear diapers?

What's a "toddler"?

The award-winning team who created Hello Benny! What It's Like To Be A Baby has created a second picture book for their series, Growing Up Stories -- books that tell enchanting stories and fascinating facts about the first five years of life.

Go! Go! Maria! tells the story of Maria and celebrates her second year of life -- from walking on her own for the very first time to running from room to room, from learning how to say "No!" "Me!" and "Mine!" to asking her big brother Percy "What dat?" to pinching her friend Molly, and to singing her own name on her second birthday. Go! Go! Maria! captures the remarkable story of how 1-year-olds "grow up."

Combining a beautifully told story with a myriad of fascinating facts about 1-year-olds, Robie H. Harris and Michael Emberley have created another timeless book for children to enjoy and for families to share together.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 5--Including some simple Spanish dialogue, Harris tells about Maria's development in her second year. Such toddler achievements as turning on the television and learning to talk are illustrated with Emberley's cheerful cartoons done in pen, watercolor, and pastels. Accompanying text boxes discuss facets of toddler behavior in simple language. While the egocentricity of three- and four-year-olds precludes much interest in books about a younger child, and the story is too wordy for the very young, Maria! is a wonderful book to explain toddler behavior to older siblings and baby-sitters. The developmental text could also be helpful for teenage parents, who may be reluctant or unable to read the lengthy parenting tomes that are available.--Jane Barrer, Washington Square Village Creative Steps, New York City

From Booklist

PreS-K. The second in the Growing Up Stories series, which began with Hello, Benny! (2002), is as delightful as its predecessor. This time one-year-old Maria is the star attraction, learning to walk and run, exploring the wider world outside her home, and driving her older brother, Percy, crazy. The dynamic combination of Harris' text and Emberley's sweepingly energetic cartoon-style art depicts Maria always on the move as it conducts parents and their kids through the developmental landmarks of a child Maria's age. On each double-page spread is a brief storylike glimpse of Maria in action, which can easily be read aloud to a wiggly toddler. In addition, there are several pictures (the one of Maria wearing white jockey shorts as a hat is priceless) that cheerfully capture and extend Maria's "adventures in living." For grown-ups, Harris also provides a boxed inset, clearly explaining how Maria's behavior relates to child development. The large format makes the book ideal for sharing, so the learning process can be a real family affair. It's fun and fact in a lively package. Stephanie Zvirin

5.0 out of 5 stars Teaching its readers how one-year-old children are, September 13, 2003
This review is from: Go! Go! Maria!: What It's Like To Be 1 (Growing Up Stories: What It's Like to Be a Baby) (Hardcover)
Go! Go! Maria! is the second picture book in the outstanding "Growing Up Stories" picture book series written by Robie H. Harris and illustrated by Michael Emberley. Go! Go! Maria! is a warm and educational story about what one-year-old children are like. Following the adventures of a young girl living the second year of her life, it has many asides teaching its readers how one-year-old children are, to the slow process of learning to walk, to thumb-sucking, potty training, and more. Go! Go! Maria! is recommended for young readers as a thoroughly enjoyable and informative read which highlighted throughout with playful full-color illustrations. Also very strongly recommended for school and community library collections is the first volume in the "Growing Up Stories" series: Hello Benny! What It's Like To Be A Baby...
