"True Romance" from the album GO

Biography

Life is complex but we’ve got plenty of tries to get it right–which is why when Motion City Soundtrack frontman Justin Pierre sings, “All the destruction will one day end and you’ll finally know exactly who you are”—it’s a sentiment of self-discovery filled with optimism instead of regret. Correspondingly after putting out one album on Columbia, Motion ... Read more in Amazon's Motion City Soundtrack Store

Editorial Reviews

Motion City Soundtrack built their fanbase one fan at a time, through breakout tours with All American Rejects and Fallout Boy, on the 2006 Warped Tour and mtvU s Campus Invasion, and at festivals like Bamboozle and Lollapalooza (2008). They appeared on Conan O Brien and Jimmy Kimmel, earned glowing press from Rolling Stone to Entertainment Weekly, and received solid support at MTV, FUSE, and MTV2. Returning to their longtime label Epitaph to release Go, Motion City Soundtrack present the most mature and developed album of their long career. Continuing a dichotomy between upbeat music and darker lyricism that stretches back to their breakout single "The Future Freaks Me Out, " Go sees the band both maturing lyrically and musically while reinvigorating the signature melodic, keyboard driven sound that their longtime fans love. Despite the full circle musical evolution they ve undergone with Go, the band members agree that in some ways they feel like the same way they did when Motion City Soundtrack was starting to make their mark in the early 2000s.

4.0 out of 5 stars MCS has evolved June 12, 2012
By MCS Fan
Format:Audio CD
This album is not bad, but it's pretty different from their previous efforts. Gone appear to be the frequent catchy guitar riffs replaced with much more melodic verses and stanzas. One of the things I absolutely LOVE about MCS is the catchy riffs and punk-poppish music. This album has a lot less of that. I love this band, and I would never down any of their work, but this is probably my least favorite album of theirs. Who knows though, it may grow on me after a few listens.

Here's my track by track thoughts on the new record:

1. - "Circuits and Wires" - It starts with a keyboard fizzle, followed by the typical opening drum rolls and baseline with the emergence of the guitars after the first few lines. Standard MCS song. It's a decent tune. 4/5

2. - "True Romance" - Most MCS fans have probably heard this song already as it was released in advance of the album. It's a good song. Very reminiscent of stuff on Even If It Kills Me. 4/5

3. - "Son Of A Gun" - Not really a huge fan of this song at the beginning, but it gets better once the music picks up at the chorus. I do like the lyrics though... Meh. 3/5

4. - "Timelines" - This is a good song, and the first one that sounds like something I would feel in my life... which is something that initially drew me to this band... their ability to capture my thoughts in the lyrics. Its kinda catchy, and Justin sings it perfectly. 5/5

5. - "Everyone Will Die" - Actually my favorite song on the album... even though it slaps everything I just said right in the face due to the fact that I was complaining about the lack of riffy catchiness. Its pretty much acoustic with some drums present. Justin simply sings beautifully on it... and I LOVE the message behind it. Something we would all do well to think about... 5/5

6. - "The Coma Kid" - This too is a pretty good song. I like the guitars in this song. A lot more "typical" of an MCS song than most on this album. Maybe it's just me but Justin's voice seems a little higher on this album... 4/5

7. - "Boxelder" - I love the chorus to this song. The verses are once again, absent of the catchy guitar riffs we have grown so accustomed to... I'm trying to get used to the new style... 3.5/5

8. - "The Worst Is Yet To Come" - Ahh... from the opening 5 seconds I was like.. FINALLY! But then another verse minus any catchy guitar work or punky riffs... but at least there is some guitar present. The pre-chorus and chorus are definitely the best parts of the song... 3.5/5

9. - "Bad Idea" - Another song with a slow, acoustic start... which seems to be an omnipresent trend on this album... but once we get to the chorus we get the guitar and keyboard and all is good in the world! It's a catchy song. 4/5

10 - "Happy Anniversary" - This song kinda creeped me out when I first heard it. I really like the music. The lyrics are actually kinda haunting, especially the way Justin sings them. It could almost be a soundtrack song for a horror movie. I expected some happy song based on the title. Quite the opposite. Gotta love shock-value! I liked it! 4.5/5

11 - "Floating Down The River" - The album ends on a song very similar to the opening song. A good combo of the guitar/keyboard that makes MCS unique and awesome. It's not a real quick paced song, but it's a solid finisher. 4/5

Overall, I like the album. It's not as good in my honest opinion, as some of their earlier work. Mind you though, I've listened to it twice... so I am sure it will grow on me as their music always does. It's worth the $$$. I've spend more on much crappier albums than this, and its not crappy. Im just particular about MCS, and I am a big fan of the geeky rock style they have... either way. I bought it. I dont regret it. You wont either.

Enjoy!

*** UPDATE ***
Been a week, the album has definitely grown on me a LOT. I love it now.

By the way... GET THE BONUS TRACKS! I had bought the regular edition of the album, and bought the 3 bonus tracks ($0.99 each), off Amazon. Great songs. Get em.

I see from the reviews that there are fans who love "Go" and a few who don't. I will join the former--I personally think the album shows MCS's consistency and ability to just make great music. "My Dinosaur Life" shocked us fans with the virtual absence of the Moog in favor of a slightly more "rock" sound. I loved "MDL" but every since I heard "Capital H", I've loved MCS's use of the Moog. In "Go", the band brings it back and does a few little different things with it. Musically, I find "Go" to be a mix of "Even If It Kills Me" and the aforementioned "MDL". IMO, the album is solid and, while maybe not stretching the band with any atypical songs (like "The Conversation" or "History Lesson"), the album also succeeds in fielding a track list in which I don't find myself wanting to skip over any songs. And tipping my hat to them, MCS is one of the only modern bands I follow that has managed to stay true to their sound over a decade while still creating fresh albums that make me want to play them over and over. MCS has earned my trust that if I buy any of their albums, I will always feel it is money well spent. Here, here!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid Album November 25, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Amazon Verified Purchase
I love Motion City, so getting this album was a no-brainer. It's a good album, I don't regret buying it. There are no songs I'd skip over.

They calmed it down a bit on this album, in my opinion. Acoustic guitars, slower timing, just generally more chill. This is by no means a bad thing, just different.

My favorite song is "Happy Anniversary." I'm not sure if it's because it was the one (new) song at their concert that caught my attention (I hadn't heard any of this album before the show), or what. It's haunting... the overall tone of the song. I really dig it.

"Timelines" is the catchiest song on this album. It sounds the most like their prior efforts to me.

I like this album, I don't feel like this is too off course from other albums, just a bit less electric and slower. I would still recommend it for all Motion City fans.
