Biography

Robin Trower is the UK-born blues/rock guitarist and former front man with Procol Harum.

Trower played guitar for a number of bands, the best known of which was The Paramounts, before he came to fame with the UK prog-rock band Procol Harum. The band topped the UK charts for six weeks in 1967 with the Bach inspired "A Whiter Shade of Pale". He left the Procol Harum in 1972 and set up Jude with… Read more in Amazon's Robin Trower Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Most Mature & Psychedelic Trower In Decades, September 3, 2000

Alrighty now, this CD is a gift from above. Trower finally gets back to form and away from the boring standard blues thing. Let's face it Trower is not your average blues guitarist, he is equally also an R&B guitarist AND probably the best psychedelic guitarist since Jimmi. On here he varies his tones to create a much more brain-bending effect than he's done since the 70's. This CD, like his great one's from the 70's has many influences. Using unusual chords, funky rhythms, beautiful psychedelic solos, and most of all - very mature and spiritual lyrics (no standard blues "lost my baby" here). The songs are mostly about spiritual longing. Robin and Richard share the vocals and both are very competant - they sound good (they aint no James Dewar but who is?) but the main thing is that they are expressive (you can here in Robin's voice that he feels every word). The songs themselves are very well crafted - the melodies really stick with you. Every Trower fan I've met at shows has loved this disc - I don't understand where some of the reviews here are coming from. Finally an album which belongs up there right next to Bridge of Sighs and For Earth Below. If you want standard blues don't buy it, if you want Classic Trower, GET IT NOW AND SUPPORT THE MASTER.

5.0 out of 5 stars Possess it and undress it TROWERHEADS!, January 14, 2003

This review is from: Go My Way (Audio CD)
I lost track of Robin during the 90's, but caught up with him on, GO MY WAY, and I am duly impressed...and yes Robin can sing. Robin spins out a slightly harder/faster style on songs such as RUN WITH THE WOLVES and the title track GO MY WAY, where Robin and the drummer tear it up, LITERALLY - the jam between them could go on for 40 minutes. TOO MUCH JOY also wraps up with a slightly slower beat and TAKE THIS RIVER is like a runaway train that suddenly goes into intermission...I LOVE IT-I HATE IT-I LOVE IT -- it is a major TEASE!LONG HARD GAME is a funky, bluesy tune that you would swear Stevie Ray's spirit joined in on. Slower tunes such as INTO DUST, ON YOUR OWN, IN MY DREAM are true vintage Trower ballads. Buy it now and chant...hall of fame, hall of fame, hall of fame...:)

This is the SECOND review I've written for this CD. "What happened to my first review" I wonder, and you should too, for it raises the possibility that the reviews you read are NOT completely representative of what Amazon customers had to say...

Setting that aside, you should know that I've been a devoted Trower fan for over two decades now. When I tell you that there are only one or two cuts on this latest Trower outing that I find 'ok', several that are good-to-really good, and two or three that are absolutely stellar/primo/soul-fillingly good listening, I do so as an experienced listener.

If you long for the days of vocalist Dewar and will be satisfied with nothing less, then don't bother buying the CD. But, if you like the idea of Robin's superb and haunting licks adding presence and depth to vocals that range from Dylan-esque to near grunge, BUY THIS CD!

This is one of Trower's best works; certainly one of his best in a long time. Buy it, and while you're at it get 20th Century Blues too. You won't be dissapointed.
