Go Sailor,
By A Customer
This review is from: Go Sailor (Audio CD)
As far as sugary bubble-gum pop goes, few bands compare to Go Sailor, a group which features Rose of 'Tiger Trap' and 'The Softies', and Paul from 'Crimpshrine'. Clean guitar, noodley bass, and angelic vocals (and I mean that literally) make this band a perfect, compact, de-stressifier after a long day at work. This CD, "Go Sailor", is a collection of three of their seven-inches and two compilation tracks, but none the less, it plays as though it were conceived as a full album, and is recorded and produced fairly well.Fans of Heavenly, Tiger Trap, The Softies, or any of the other old school girlie-pop bands will dig this CD.

The first time I heard of Go Sailor was from a little movie called "But I'm a Cheerleader..." The song featured in the movie (which by the way is awesome) that really caught my attention was "Ray of Sunshine." From the first time I heard I thought it was one of the best pop songs I had ever heard. From there I heard "A Fine Day For Sailing" and "Together Forever In Love." I couldn't believe how good, tight, beautiful and honest these songs were. People on here complain that this is one big song. I agree to some point. They do play one certain STYLE of music, and you definately have to like that style to get it, but that doesn't mean every song is the same. I listened to the album all the way through for the first time the other day and I can't believe how sadly beautiful each song is. Nick Hornby said it best in his book "Songbook" when he said that if you're trying to write about anything other than love, you should write an essay, a powerpoint presentation or some other format than music, but love is the one thing that has to be expressed in song or poetry. It's so hard to pin down in regular language, and that's what's so simultaneously beautiful and depressing about it - and Go Sailor captures that with near-perfection.
PS- I am convinced Rose Melberg has one of the best, sweetest voices ever. Peace out.

Just Awesome! The best of an Indie-Goddess!,
By Indie Ink (SF, CA) - See all my reviews

After you go through this album you'll just have to play it over again, then maybe a third and fourth time. Rose Melberg, currently of The Softies, and previously of Tiger Trap, made this catchy album of love, hate, and resolution--all over poppy, fast-paced lyrics and music. If your an indie fan, or you like music in the style of the Go-Go's "Head over Heels," than this album will be your stepping stone into Rose Melberg obsession.

One Great Bubblegum Album,

The mellifluous voice of Rose Melberg carries this album throughout. The songs do run together as previously stated, but that doesn't take away at the very bittersweet sound that would easily rank as one of my personal favorite albums. It is the greatest bubblegum album I have heard (along with Pink Hearts Yellow Moons from Dressy Bessy) and I would highly recommend this album, along with any other work from Rose, such as The Softies and Tiger Trap.

This collection is best mixed with other music, as other reviewers have mentioned. To listen to this straight through would be rather monotonous -- not to dissuade a fan of Rose Melberg from buying this album, but it's all thematic. Still essential for anyone who enjoys The Softies or Rose's other work.I took the plunge, really wanting the one listed as sold out on Amazon's site, since there's no indication how many tracks this CD has... this IS the same CD, a compilation of all of Go Sailor's EPs... You're welcome!

Taken individually, the songs are catchy pop tunes. As a collection the themes of the songs run together a little. Still a pretty good listen.

One big bubblegum song,
By A Customer
This review is from: Go Sailor (Audio CD)
This is not so much an album as one continuous song. All of the songs are soooooo samey. Like some of the previous reviewers said, if you listen to one particular song, you might think, yeah, I like it, catchy. But then there's the next song in exactly the same vein...and the next...and the next....until it ceases to be catchy and begins being truly monotonous.

As bitter as it is sweet,

The people who say this album is one big bubblegum song obviously aren't terribly observant. First of all, this album isn't at all slick, nor is it too cute or sticky sweet. It's actually a pretty sombre and bitter album, but the music is jangly and delicious in an early sixties pop/Smiths kinda way. Emotionally, this album really grabs you, and it never gets whiny or too sugary. It's a very smart album, and I advise you to buy it before it goes totally out of print. An essential indie album. Also, I learned of this album through the film But I'm A Cheerleader, which is a film I think everyone should see. :)

i would have to agree with mr. jason brown. the songs are great when sandwiched between some tullycraft and beat happening on a mix tape...but they do seem to run together a bit when taken as a whole on the album.
