Book Description

“Go, Sam, Go” is the story of Sam Neace’s 500-mile walk from his hometown of Hazard, Kentucky to Oprah Winfrey’s studio in Chicago, Illinois. In September of 2009 and just eighteen months removed from chemotherapy, Sam, an author, set out across the Kentucky coalfields on a mission to make good on his second chance at life. He had two goals for his trip: to raise money for the American Cancer Society and to hand deliver copies of his writings to Oprah. Along the way, Sam braved the elements, voracious pets, local celebrities, and the entire state of Indiana to finally arrive at 1058 West Washington Boulevard in downtown Chicago. This book, which includes the journal Sam kept during his battle with cancer, chronicles not just a journey on foot from Kentucky mountains to Chicago sidewalks, but also a journey through adversity and disease to find out just what can happen when we reach a point in life where there’s no choice left but to go meet Oprah, if she will meet him.

I love this book! I am so glad I could be a part of Sam's walk to Oprah. Sam is an amazing person who writes with such great passion. I'm using excerpts from this book with my students before they write their personal pieces. Buy this and read it now! You'll both laugh and cry!

4.0 out of 5 stars Walking with Purpose September 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I picked up "Go, Sam, Go" on the recommendation of a friend. The $5.00 price tag for the Kindle version was certainly convincing enough to pick up for a quick read. I found the battle with cancer, discipline, endurance, and ambition demonstrated by the author to be absolutely outstanding. I guess anyone with enough gumption to attempt a 500 mile walk is either incredibly motivated or undeniably insane. I found the book to be a delight. I shed a tear or two, laughed a little, and shook my head at times. There were some parts a little too crass for my taste, but overall, a good and inspiring read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it so much, I bought it twice!!! May 29, 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Would you have the courage to set out on a 500 mile journey on foot? Me, personally? No. However, it wasn't just the courage to set out on this once in a lifetime experience, but to do so after just having gone through possibly one of the scariest and emotionally draining experiences of your life, cancer, is even more amazing! This book had me laughing out loud one minute and almost in tears the next. It also made me realize, that there isn't anything in life you cannot accomplish. All you have to do is try!

5.0 out of 5 stars Walk a While With Sam.... January 22, 2014

Go, Sam, Go! A Dreamer’s 500-mile Walk to Oprah
By Sam Neace

One man’s memoir of his hike from Kentucky to Illinois is also meant to raise awareness of testicular cancer.

Don’t let the title fool you. This is not a story of a simple trek. Walk a while with testicular cancer survivor Sam Neace and you’ll never have a dull moment. His personality, sense of humor, and relatable tales along the way will have you smiling and chuckling all the way through the book. Along his journey he is faced with extreme weather, self-doubt, prejudice, and down right mean people sometimes, but he is also blessed by family, long-time friends and new acquaintances who offered their continued generosity, kindness, and unwavering support.

His reasons for walking are noble and admirable— is walk is for cancer charity, his goal is a book endorsement from Oprah herself— but his travels became an amusing and enlightening collection of unforseen wonders and humorous memories. At times you’ll wish you had been right beside him for the journey. Sam balances his tale with wit, comedic wisdom, and heart-tugging details about his experience with testicular cancer treatment. His story is a fun read, but also a thought provoking insight to anyone whose life is touched by cancer.

A walk worth taking with Sam that will have you feeling like one of his closest friends.
