What A Wonderful Album!, January 15, 2002

The only trouble with this album is it's TOO SHORT. There are only five songs here and we need many more from two women who are this talented and beautiful. Lisa Christian and Lisa Durand provide the listener with a feast of gorgeous music here and with witty, intelligent, and incisive lyrics to go with it. "Go West, Virginia," "Sway," and "Unfaithful Woman" deserve to be classics, and these ladies' voices are magic and melting (sounding much better and having a far greater range than those of too many "famous" singers). If you like rock, folk, or country music you should like this album. What a treat! I can't wait for their next CD and you shouldn't, either. You should buy this debut miracle now!

What do you end up with when you throw together two ladies of remarkable vocal, instrumental, and writing prowess, but completely different musical backgrounds? You get somethng like this CD from the Atlanta duo Christian/Durand.
The five tracks on Go West, Virginia show just how well their styles have blended to give a great fusion of funk, blues, and country. (Lisa Christian brings primarily the first two of these, Lisa Durand the last.) Each track highlights some new feature of their sound.
"Something in the Water" and "Don't It Feel Like Georgia" bring Durand's lyrical harmonica to the front, while "Sway" finds her trading her twang off against Christian's smoky vocal texture. On the title track, they team up for harmonies that are just too good to resist.
The standout track, though, is "Unfaithful Woman," where both ladies get to show off on six-string with a little help from backup player Peter Vogl. This one has an urgent edge that carries it all the way through from first beat to last, breaks included.
It's too bad the album is as short as it is--I've seen them play live several times, and they've easily got enough killer material for a disc three times the length of this one. But you take what you can get sometimes, and this is one great way to start out.
