Book Description

10 and up5 and up
An innovative exploration of the world of travel, Go! inspires the reader to take a fresh look at everyday transport. It peels back the roof of a jumbo jet, follows a day in the life of Grand Central Terminal, pulls apart a classic car, and looks at the luxury of life aboard a modern cruise ship. A historical context is provided by timelines, which open each chapter, while astonishing facts and detailed descriptions explain modern transport methods and networks. Stunning new photography and illustrations take the reader on an amazing visual journey, and ten inventive foldout features add to the dynamic concept of this exciting and original book. Go! is divided into three thematic chapters: Water, Land, and Air. Within each section the types of transport within these areas are extensively explored. Technology is explained, and exploded anatomies of selected vehicles show just how complex - or simple - their mechanics are. The social and environmental impact of different methods of transport is examined, and first-hand accounts from passengers and workers bring to life photographic chronologies of an airport, train station, a metro system, bus depot, and ferry.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 5 Up—Fasten your seatbelts for plenty of transportation thrills. The skilled team that completed this jam-packed compilation of facts and photos traveled 116,545 miles. On their visits to countries across the globe, they took 2000 bus, 10 ferry, and 3000 train rides to document this handsome volume. A fighter jet, a red sports car, and a speed boat race across the eye-catching red, yellow, green, and blue striped holographic cover. The volume is divided into three chunky sections with data and photos grouped into categories. Each section overflows with crisp, well-composed photos that range in size from foldout spreads to pictures the size of postage stamps. Photo captions swell with factual details. A time line of historical developments for each mode of transportation opens each section. Some articles are quite unusual. The section on air transportation, for instance, discusses collectible air-sickness bags. The text consists of short paragraphs surrounded by a plethora of photo captions. Font size varies throughout. Some pages are meant to be read horizontally and others vertically. Fascinating foldout spreads show components used in building a racing sailboat, a racing motorcycle, and light aircraft. Readers learn about the Delhi bus system, a Gibbs Aquada water-and-land vehicle, plane production, and more. Great as a browsing item, this publication is destined to fly off library shelves.—Lynn K. 5.0 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this book!, September 3, 2007
By
Kelly "mom of boys" (Glen Allen, VA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Go! The Whole World of Transportation (Hardcover)
This book is a must-have for any little boy who LOVES all things transportation! While my son is only 5 yrs old and can't read all of the text, the images in the book can captivate his attention and fascinate him for 30-45 mins at a time ... and he's not a sit-down-and-read-type of kid. There are many pages that fold out and expand to show up close details of the cars, trucks, planes, boats, etc. featured in the book and with the 200+ pages, this book provides endless enterainment for my son without ever having to read the same thing twice. We checked this out from our local library and after 4 wks my son was so tearful to have to return it that we had to buy one to keep.

This review is from: Go! The Whole World of Transportation (Hardcover)
My son loves this book. We had worn out our welcome at the public library checking it out so we had to buy it. My only complaint is that the pages are a little vulnerable to tearing because the book is heavy. It has that much information in it.
