Book Description

October 1, 1998
It's a manifesto--a call to art! A call to self-expression, to taking the road less traveled. For too long, people have been buying paintings because they match the furniture, turning to sappy, picture-postcard landscapes or abstract swirls in designer colors. Well, Fred Babb is an artist and true art lover who's had it with this soulless art approach, and in Go to Your Studion and Make Stuff he presents an illustrated rallying cry for creativity, the purity of expression, and a return to honest, unpretentious, heartfelt art. Go to Your Studion and Make Stuff combines 26 full-color paintings with inspiring text about the power of art and the imagination. On the big, framable poster pages are Babb's colorful masklike faces and heads, the strange characters with the startled eyes and open mouths. But Babb has always mixed text and image, and these paintings convey his famous art observations: "Art can't hurt you." "Art is one of the few things left worth doing." "Good art is often too broad to fit through narrow minds." And the classic: "Good art won't match your sofa." Facing the paintings are Babb's thoughts about art. Like the work itself, Babb's ideas are personal, quirky, refreshing, and very insightful.

ART THAT WON'T MATCH YOUR SOFA

Art about art. Art that is bright, cheerful, and subversive. Art that is idiosyncratic and in-your-face as it celebrates creativity, self-expression, and taking the road less traveled. Art to hang with pride. This is Fred Babb's work.

Fred Babb's book "Go to Your Studio and Make Stuff" is an excellent source of paintings and essay about being an artist. I use them for inspiration and reflection in my classroom. I get many comments from my art students and the classroom teachers.

This review is from: Go to Your Studio and Make Stuff: The Fred Babb Poster Book (Paperback)
I am seeking to purchase a second of this book to keep intact so I can use the posters in my art classroom. This book gives a whimsical, colorful, poignant, yet serious look at Art from the viewpoint of Fred Babb. The illustrations are unique and portray the attitude of the artist well. A "must have" for anyone interested in making a comment on art for adults as well as children!

This review is from: Go to Your Studio and Make Stuff: The Fred Babb Poster Book (Paperback)
This book has renewed my faith in art and life. Mr. Babb has a true sense of what it takes to be an artist in this "dog eat dog world". I am praying for second book for this master of humor and insightfulness.
