There is a very long delay in the video preview feed to the iPhone/iPad and you cannot have a live feed while recording, but it's pretty awesome it's here now.
But once people see it on "Shark Week" they gotta have it.
I'd never be able to give a GoPro to my wife or mother, for that I'd buy a Canon PowerShot.
I say this because Hero is obviously designed and built by engineers for enthusiasts. These would be people that look beyond the engineering interface, and have a sense of accomplishment when it finally works for them.
The WiFi remote has that cryptic GoPro feel to it--not to mention the worse design of any connector for its power cable I've ever seen in any product to date. Basically if you loose it (or forget it, there is no way you're going to find another customized USB to GoPro Captian Hook connector.
The setup can be obscure too, or it can be somewhat easy if you use their included software CineStudio to setup the WiFi. Once that's done, its a matter of connecting the remote to the wifi network.
That seems to go perfectly fine on my Hero2 but the Hero1 has some success but doesn't seem to work 100%.
The good news is they've released their "App" for the wifi adapter. When I first used the App with this wifi adapter I said "This is what they really needed." It is a regular app, doesn't look like anything a GoPro Engineer would design--it is simple and easy-to-use so I'm guessing they farmed out the design.
The App saves GoPro as they enter mainstream, IMHO. If I were them, I'd give away their remote (after changing the power adapter to regular micro USB) and advocate using the smart phone app. Of course when using the App you have to be connected to the Wi-Fi Adapter's network, not your own.Read more ›
GoPro Wi-Fi BacPac + Wi-Fi Remote Combo Kit
So far that has not materialized, and there is no firm date when it will. They keep saying it's "coming soon," and the latest promise, "coming Fall 2012."
This is a deal make-or-break promise, that has been hanging fire ever since the release of the Hero 2, October 23, 2011.
So far the App is Pie in the Sky. A suggestion for GoPro would be, since your coders can't seem to produce a working App, instead of having the promise of an App that never materializes, how about putting out a Software Developer's Kit (SDK) for the GoPro HD HERO 2 and offer an, "X Prize," for the best App submission. There are a lot of very talented folks out there!
Received my replacement today. The update went through flawlessly. The initial order was defected. Nonetheless, I'm still giving this a 3 STARS (updated from 1 STAR) not the fact that I don't like the item, in fact I love it. The reason for the 3 STARS and NOT Five is the fact that the device does not work out-of-the-box. You need to spend time updating the firmware before you can actually use it. I strongly believe that any product should be ready (firmware updated) for consumers to use prior to shipping it to the consumer's hands.
First of all, the product does not work out of the box. You will need to update all three devices in order to get it working; the camera, remote and wi-fi bacpac. I have updated the camera successfully with some minor obstacles. The pain is with the BacPac and Remote, I have spent 2 days working on it, still no go = ( I have tried on multiple computers and didn't operating system. Something is definitely wrong with this. I'm seeing a lot of problem (firmware update) with this. Very disappointed.
1) The remote will not work unless it's plugged into my iMac. It shows a full battery, but once I unplug it, it goes off immediately.
2) Setup is a HUGE pain. I had to do the remote firmware upgrade about 4 times before it finally completed "successfully". Overall, I spent about 3 hours trying to get it setup and working... and I'm a computer guy! I'm generally good at this stuff... but this software is SO BUGGY!
It doesn't take much research to see that GoPro is putting out a lot of broken/buggy products these days. Just check out the HERO 3 reviews on here. My advice is to stay away until the issues get resolved.
I'll be returning this BacPac+Remote tonight.

The product arrived on time. The instructions manual that comes with the BacPac is wholly insufficient. One must watch the online video on the GoPro website. Read morePublished on October 12, 2012 by Udaya Karunaratne
