Specifically designed to stand up to challenging conditions--such as entertaining the kids while driving over rough terrain--the GoVideo DP8240 portable DVD player prepares you for the adventures that lie ahead. The unit's off-road construction is built for the rigors of an active lifestyle, with anti-shock protection (ASP) to prevent disc interruption and stylish "impact shield" rubber edges that cushion electronics from bumps and bruises. The player's 8.4-inch LCD screen, meanwhile, is configured for 16:9 widescreen movies, so you can enjoy the DVD format in all its glory.

The DP8240 comes with a rechargeable NiMH battery pack good for about 2.7 hours of playing time, along with a credit-card-style remote that's small enough to slip into a pocket. In addition, the player isn't restricted to DVDs, with support for such additional formats as DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, audio CD, CD-R/RW, Kodak Picture CD, and recordable discs filled with JPEG images or MP3 music files. You can even show your custom digital photos in slideshow format to relatives while traveling.

Among the unit's playback functions are multi-angle playback, which shows select movie scenes from different angles (requires compatible DVD); multi-speed forward and reverse scan; track programming (MP3 only) for creating a custom play list; repeat play (one or all tracks); and subtitles (also requires compatible disc).

The LCD screen isn't restricted to DVD playback, either. Users can connect a camcorder, video game console, or other external audio or video source through the A/V inputs to enjoy home movies and games through the display while on the go. Plus, the DP8240 offers a coaxial digital audio output, which you can route through your 5.1 surround-decoding A/V receiver and multichannel speaker system to enjoy true home theater sound (cable not included). As an alternative, you can listen through the built-in stereo speakers, or take advantage of the 3.5 mm headphone jack to listen in private.

The unit even sports a progressive-scan/S-video output for use with your high-definition or HD-ready TV or monitor. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Simply connect the DP8240 to an HD-capable TV and you'll see full 480p resolution, rather than the 480i that's native to the built-in monitor.

Finally, the DP8240 includes a few extra accessories for added convenience, including a cigarette lighter adapter that plugs into your car's 12-volt cigarette jack, a universal AC/DC power adapter, one audio and one video hookup cable, and a quick reference guide. The unit also carries a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.

Hello All,

I purchased this unit as a replacement for a COBY TFDVD7100 Portable DVD Player; the Coby unit would NOT PLAY anything other than PRE-RECORDED DVD's and CD's. All my homemade DVD's caused the player to go into meltdown mode no matter which brand DVD I tried in it. I attempted to play JVC, Fuji Film, TDK and Ridata DVD's and each time the player would freeze-up. Now for the good news, this new Go.Video player will play ANYTHING I throw at it! I took a sampling of my DVD's into a local store FIRST before I purchased this unit to see if they would all play and, they did! This alone is one VERY FAVORABLE feature of this unit let alone the fact that it has an 8.4-inch screen.

I looked high and low before deciding to purchase this unit and I do so because it is unstoppable with what I put to it. Another selling point is that this unit has INPUTS so that it will double as a monitor for your video camera. With all the features and things that this player does I think you will be hard pressed to find something that does more for less.

Our travel time in the mornings are long so I bought the dp8440 model for the car. My only complaint is the cover that holds the dvd's in place has very flimsy plastic and that was the first to go. I have had this dvd player for a while and if it can stand Nemo and Care Bears 4000 times it's worth the money. It has been dropped countless times, stepped on etc... still runs. I can't tell you the pain my 5 year old has inflicted on this player. Good stuff.

I just got this, but it has a good picture, good volume, good color. I went and looked at others at Best Buy and I like the picture on this better and it is a great price for a 8 inch screen. I don't know about the durability yet, but it seems to be a good deal over all.
