2.0 out of 5 stars Cannot be used as a VCR, April 22, 2006

Bought 2 from Fry's on April 17, 2006.

Must return since cannot be used as a VCR because the clock jumps
30 seconds in a random direction every time the unit is turned on
or off. This includes when a program is timer recorded.

It isn't one defective unit as both do the same thing.

Calling customer support is a joke because one gets an automated
menu with no access to a real person. None of the automated
menu intems refer to the timer problem.

Tried writing to the e-mail address, but received no answer after
3 days.

All the other features seem to work as advertized.

1.0 out of 5 stars DVD stopped working, April 18, 2006

After less than 2 years, the VCR works fine - but then I've used it maybe 3 times. The DVD part tells me bad disc or no disc, and I cannot get any information about repair centers, either online or by phone. The Customer Service Center is apparently permanently closed. I know this is a cheapie, but I expected more from it. My Panasonic DVD-only is still working fine after 6 years. Don't buy Go Video, unless you're prepared to replace it every couple years.

This is my second DVD player from GoVideo. The first one lasted about two years, which was twice as long as my Magnavox survived and I used the GoVideo player much more frequently. What makes GoVideo so awesome is the EZPlay/Autoplay feature -- you can set it to skip that annoying stuff at the beginning of DVDs and go straight to playing the video (sometimes it gets confused and starts somewhere else). If you have kids you should be familiar with the increasingly standard practice of DVDs that disable FFwd and Menu, thereby forcing your little ones to watch ads every single time they want to watch one of their favorite videos. If it wasn't for this feature, I'd have to stop buying DVDs from certain companies. Remember when you read reviews of GoVideo products that movie companies disable those buttons for a reason and are not very happy with this lone wolf company, so they'd do almost anything to keep you from buying one. Regarding customer service, when I bought my first player, I had to ask them a question and they picked up right away. Although my last one survived just under two years, it was used at least 10-20 hours a week, and no inexpensive player will last that long when used that often. Until I get a dual DVD drive and can rip and burn my own DVDs, in order to take off the annoying stuff I don't want my kids to watch, I'll keep buying GoVideo players. If you are worried about it breaking down, do like I did -- buy an extended warranty so that when it breaks down you'll get your money back. I've only had the new player for a week now, so I can't really comment on the features, but both the DVD and VCR work just like they are supposed to and the Autoplay feature has definitely been improved! I have tried a number of DVDs that gave EZPlay headaches but Autoplay finds the start of the video perfectly. If this does break down anytime soon, I'll be sure to post that here and perhaps change my recommendation. One last thing, regarding the warranty that comes with the player, I don't know of any company that offers more than 90 days on their inexpensive DVD players, so to single out GoVideo for that is not justified.

Like other reviewers, I was very disappointed with this unit. I bought two. On one the DVD died after a few weeks. The other one still has a working DVD, but records very poorly on the VCR.

I'm surprised Amazon.com is still selling these lemons.

2.0 out of 5 stars DVD 'BAD' after a few months, July 23, 2006

My daughter bought one of these for college and at first it was OK. After about 6 months it started disliking DVDs and now it almost always comes up "BAD" on the front panel display. I've tried it dozens of times with different DVDs and only once did it come up to "PLAY", but I ejected and re-inserted and it was back to "BAD". I suspect the speed is the problem not the optics, but I could be wrong. I will attempt a return to Costco.
Now that I see many similar complaints at different places on the Internet I would go with a trusted brand next time like Sony, Toshiba or Panasonic.

I purchase several of this as a donation to my daughter's school. They have been using them for years without problems. It's a great product that supports both VHS tapes and CD/DVD. Definitely the best of breed for this class. No problems.

1.0 out of 5 stars dvd stops working, January 29, 2006

We got tired of spending decent money for these and went with this inexpensive combo. The DVD player stopped working after playing about a dozen discs. First sign of trouble displayed "bad disc," which proved to be the same message for all discs. Tech support is useless. Online, I couldn't get their website to show any service center. A call to their 800 support gets you into an on-line long list of possible problems, none of which address the non-playing of DVDs. You enter loops, none of which are helpful and the option of speaking to a human never came up.
Picture quality was ok for the few movies we got to watch and the VCR still works after about 6 hours of use. These DVD players have been the worst of all electronic performers. Most seem to have less than a year of use before a major feature stops functioning. Warranties aren't much better than worthless also, because you must return it to a service center if you can locate one, and if shipped, you must return in-box at your expense. They give you 90 days on labor, which is about how long most of these last.
No more combos for us. We'll now buy the cheapest DVD and VCR separates and treat then as they are--disposables.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid VHS-DVD player, May 25, 2007

No frills unit and works fine. Go Video is a brand that was the first to push the VHS/DVD mix into their units. I have never had a problem with my unit and it was purchased in early 2005. It would be better if it was a little quieter while playing DVDs but that is minor. For the money, you can't go wrong.
