Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: GoVideo R6640 DVD Recorder and Player (Electronics)
The price is right, and controls and onscreen menus are thoughtfully designed. But I found two decisive negatives with this machine: 1. The images reproduced from camcorder digital video tape (home movies) using the "firewire" connection are lousy; very "hot", not at all clear and not at all comparable to the original tapes. 2. The machine is very touchy about what discs it will record on; it rejects many different discs of many different brands, and is not always consistent within a brand. You can find discs that will be accepted, but it's work. I've ended up using this solely as a DVD player, and for that use alone it's overpriced.

Nice menu & options, but horrible recording,

My first DVD recorder was a CyberHome CH-DVR 1500 Progressive-Scan DVD+R/+RW Recorder. I was happy with it overall, the quality was great at even 3 hours, though it couldn't delete chapters & the menu could have been better. But after 2 weeks, it seized up during a recording.
I tried Go Video the DVD+RW it came with (TDK) & Fijifilm DVD+RWs. I used it to copy VHS. The recording was horribly pixilated 30% in corners or even the whole screen & there was many times the sound went out with horrible squeaking using even SP speed. I tried recording off DishNetwork satellite w/S-Video & it came out fine using SP. I tried the 3rd time using EP & on playback it would not play at all. No matter what I tried. And I thought Cyberhome was unreliable!

Cheap product,

It is true that the unit is inexpensive but the quality of the recording is so poor you may miss your VHS tapes. Also scheduled recording is not working (better buy a tivo and transfer the recordings to your PC and then burn them to DVD form the PC)
The remote is very poor, both in design and efficiency. Cluttered buttons and you really have to be very close to the main unit for the remote to work. Also the unit doesn't work with most of the DVD brands on the market, you may see what brands are compatible on their website. The bottomline is, D O N O T S P E N D M O N E Y O N T H I S U N I T...

Good Machine - Works Great,

After figuring out how to configure the cables for my system (Audio Receiver & Satellite Receiver, no cable or over air tv) everything works fine. I used the standard video/audio inputs for recording due to lack of additional S-Video/Digital Audio outputs from Sat Receiver. Recordings look and sound good to me.
Keep User Manual handy for configuring Setup Menu.

GO VIDEO - WORST COMPANY I'VE EVER DEALT WITH,
This review is from: GoVideo R6640 DVD Recorder and Player (Electronics)
I bought a unit from GO Video and experienced horrors with their customer service as mentioned in other reviews.
My unit came without any of the accessories and after 6 weeks of talking to more than a half dozen people (with more runaround than you can even begin to imagine) at go video, I still have a unit that will not work. avoid this manufacturer!!

Buyer Beware!!! (no stars, really),

Although I purchased a different unit, the GoVideo 8440 Portable DVD Player, it played exactly 6 movies before dying. GoVideo replaced it with a refurbished model, which arrived in non-working condition. I received a THIRD replacement unit (new)from GoVideo, which failed within minutes out of the box. Please note that I have since discovered that GoVideo Inc. is NOT a member of the Better Business Bureau of Central/Northern Arizona and has MULTIPLE complaints against the company. Purchase at your own risk!!

Good basic DVD recorder,
By
This review is from: GoVideo R6640 DVD Recorder and Player (Electronics)
The recorder requires a bit of initial effort and possibly help to use, but once you figure it out, it seems to work well. There are 5 levels of quality with this recorder - the one hour is fine, the 2 and 3 1/2 hour quite good and the others fair. This does not replicate the quality of an original dvd but I have been happy with it.
My only complaint is the poor range of the remote control. The manufacturer's customer service tells me that this is a common situation with this machine.

what a piece of ....,

First of all, I have the GoVideo Dual Deck VCR player which I got about 5 years ago and that works excelently, so when it came time to upgrade my DVD player, I thought...
"why not GoVideo"? I"ll tell you why not... Their DVD player/recorder is a piece of CRAP. Let's start with that. I wanted a DVD player that could also record. While this one did just that, it seemed to have a mind of it's own. I'd only owned the damned thing for 2 months when it started acting up. e.g. When you insert a DVD disc, what do you expect? For the TV screen to show the DVD main menu, right? And when it is on the main menu, and the "PLAY" option is highlighted, meaning, if you press "play" or "OK" on the remote it should play the movie, right? WRONG! If you press "OK", it doesn't work. what happens, a blue blank screen appears on the TV screen. You have to press "play" only, apparently. And that was only after a couple months. And now it's been 9 months and my DVD player/recorder - which by the way, cost me about $170 - is not working. No "main menu", NOTHING! Hell, my homie has a regular $45 DVD player that he's had longer than me (and not from GoVideo) and the darn thing is still working! As far as I'm concerned, this is the last product I'll ever buy from GoVideo!!!! I wish there was a less than 1 rating!

Good Value at $149 with all basic features,
This review is from: GoVideo R6640 DVD Recorder and Player (Electronics)
This unit has all the features that one would expect for a VCR replacment and doesn't seem to have any critical design flaw that the other cheap recorders have had. Pros fan, good 4hr picture quality, stereo tuner, small, firewire, quick tuner response. Cons no battery backup clock, hard to set timers, no DD2.0 encoder, no Commercial advance.
