Once removed, it produces a shower of sparks.

That's about all you need for a great fire starting tool for all situations, not just emergency.

I bought 5 different fire starter kits to test out with my son. This starter was one of the two best. The long flint made it easy to generate lots of sparks.

These work.
If you camp out, hike or taking a long car journey the GobSpark FireSteel are cheap insurance for your fire lighting emergencies (or replace your soggy matches and limited use lighter).

To test it out, I stuck it under water, sparks flew after the first firm strike.

It works every time.

Delivery was super fast and packaging was secure.
Buy 2 or 3.

This is not quite as large as the full size Gobspark Firesteel and is a bit easier to carry in pack or pocket. When you need it ,it is fully up to the task of produceing great spark for fire starting. It is a bit harder to hold (for me) than the full size Gobspark Firesteel, though it produces about the same results when the Super Scraper is applied. You just can't go wrong with these ,get several for you and for your friends and practice the ART of fire makeing.

The firesteel rod is 3" long by 1/4" diameter with a plastic 2 loop holder glued to one end. This is a nice, compact firesteel setup that is easy to carry for occasional use. I carry one in the same pouch as my Leatherman Wave, also a good product. I use the back of the locking saw blade as the striker since space is limited in the leatherman pouch. The included striker works very well though.

Firesteel is actually Ferrocerium material and is an improvement over the old flint material. The important thing is it sparks very well when a striker is scraped down the side of the rod. Combine those sparks with good tinder and you have the start of a good campfire.

This is a good product and would be great for boy scout type activities or occasional campfire lighting needs. For heavy duty use, buy a larger firesteel. Every strike scrapes a bit of the material from the rod and converts it into sparks. I have a larger 3/8" diameter by 4" long firesteel for that type of use; the "armageddon" model. It's the same material and striker, just a larger rod.

If you are looking at this product it is obvious that you spend time in backcountry, or you want to be prepared to save your own bacon in a pinch (as in wilderness survival or disaster preparedness) or both. That being true, you need to be able to build a fire, even if you do not have matches or a lighter. And, that being true, you should own a GobSpark. I own (and use) a bunch of fire starters. This one is the best. I have used it to start fires in driving wind and rain, and it worked when other fire starting devices failed. Pick the size that fits best into your preparation plans, and get it.

PS: As with any emergency or survival tool, this one is useless unless you know how to use it. Practice with it (and all of your gear) in real world, adverse, circumstances BEFORE you need it for real. Take it from someone who has been there: when the stuff hits the fan, just reading books and owning gear does not cut it; only what you have practiced in worst-case, real-world circumstances will work for you.

Well I've never owned one before and managed to get a napkin to catch fire. So, it must be pretty easy to use. Haven't had to use it to start a "real" fire yet, but I'm certain it will work.

I bought this firesteel for a few reasons. After checking out many in the stores, including the off brands. I chose this one for the fact that it is a good bit larger than most of the ones you might find at your local sporting goods store. The firesteel brand is a great puchase regardless of what style you choose. The main reason for jumping at this model, is the length. I was able to secure it firmly to the sheath of my BK2. So, that even if seperated from my pack while on a hike... I would always have a good and functional fire starter on me at all times. As far as it's use... that was a great eye opener. The burst of sparks it puts off are a sure bet to get you a flame. (as long as you have a good tinder bundle to work with) And for those who post bad reviews on this product, many may not be wise as to the use of it. As I said, you do need a good tinder bundle. Your going to strike it on the ground and burn out Smokey the bear without the knowledge of creating a good bed of tinder. It does spark at 5,500 degrees f (3,000 degrees c). The shipper said I should get it in between the 1st and the 6th, but it came in on the 31st a day earlier than said. The package was nice, coming in a shipping tube... which can be reused for shipping again. I would say to anyone out there, this is a great buy.
