3.0 out of 5 stars Only his queen could break the curse... October 1, 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Shona Husk knows how to write tortured heroes! Roan was a Celtic king, until he and his men were cursed by a Druid. He was turned into the Goblin King, forced to live in the desolate Shadowlands. For almost 2,000 years, he has been in limbo as part man and part goblin. It is a constant battle to hold on to his human soul, because once it's lost he becomes one of the goblin Hoard - a fate worse than death.

The Goblin King can travel to the world of humans, also known as the Fixed Realm, through someone's nightmare or if he is summoned. Eliza had heard tales of the Goblin King as a child. Was he myth or real? She got her answer when she called to him for help as a teenager, and he appeared.

Roan sensed a special connection with Eliza, something he had never felt with his other summoners. Could she be the woman to become his queen and break the curse? When she calls for his help again many years later, he takes her to his bleak home in the Shadowlands, hoping she will agree to be his queen. But how could a cursed gray-skinned, part-goblin ever win her heart?

THE GOBLIN KING is a dark and haunting adult fairy tale. The world building was fantastic. The author's detailed descriptions of the dismal, gray world of the Shadowlands really drew me into the story. I could definitely share the anguish and desperation of Roan and his brother Dai, being cursed there for so many years. It was interesting how Roan was able to travel to the Fixed Realm through someone's nightmares and manipulate them while they slept.

I would consider this a paranormal romance, however the romance itself took a back seat for much of the book. There was actually two different stories going on: Eliza's battle with her conniving fiance Steve in the Fixed Realm, and Roan's battle against the Druid and the Hoard in the Shadowlands. The two stories eventually merged, but Roan and Eliza did spend a lot of time apart. It took me a while to warm up to Eliza's character, but I ended up loving her when she showed some backbone against Steve - what a weasel!

THE GOBLIN KING was an enjoyable read fans of dark PNR would enjoy, especially if you're into Celtic myths like I am. The next book in this series will feature Dai, Roan's brother, as the hero. I had a soft spot for Dai because he was the bookish type, and I want him to find his happily ever after too. I give THE GOBLIN KING 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I received my copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars New Author I'll Be Buying Again October 15, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
I am sure that many of the people who consider buying this book are like me and feel like over the past couple of years they have run the gamut of the paranormal romance genre. Obviously there are vampires and werewolves and assorted other shape shifters, not to mention demons and angels and dragons, random assorted immortals of various explanation and the vampireish-but-not-vampire heroes (and many other kinds not listed here). So when I was in the book store and saw the Goblin King when I was feeling glutted on the genre in general I thought "Why the hell not? Somehow they made the wolfman work" and I picked up the book (despite the cover, which is just as bad as many others in the genre. I think this book deserved a darker more romantic kind of cover instead of studly-guy-with-sword <sigh>) .
I am very glad that I did.
I have never read a book by Shona Husk but I will definitely be picking up the sequel to this book. I will not go into the plot details as they are given, but I would like to comment on the caliber of writing the Ms. Husk displays, which is not always a given in the genre. She writes beautifully. Her words are rich and resonant and more than once I found myself rereading a line. I agree with other reviewers that the hero and the heroine did spend quite a bit of time apart but I felt that made the time they were together better and allowed them to grow individually (in ways that they both needed to before the end of the book could happen). I was actually crying by the end of the book, which I don't do very frequently at all.
I would really suggest this book if you are looking for something fresh, original, and well written. I will be looking forward to the sequel The Goblin Prince.

3.0 out of 5 stars I was hoping for more. October 3, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was really intrigued by the prequel, and I really wanted to LOVE this book. However, that is not what happened. I enjoyed the story of Roan and his brother Dai but, the chemistry between the two main characters, Eliza and Roan, was lukewarm at best. I really wanted more steam and romance. Hopefully the next book in this series will not be such a let down.

The short story that lead me to read this book didn't oversell it. I really liked this book. The only thing that held me back from loving it was the bad editing.
