Book Description

March 2000
A collection of short essays on themes in science and religion, drawn from leading figures from around the world, including John Polkinghorne, Fraser Watts, Arthur Peacocke, John Habgood and Keith Ward. The contributors are mainly scientists, but there are also essays by philosophers, theologians and psychologists. They come from a variety of religious traditions but share a desire to deepen our understanding of God through our understanding of the universe.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Templeton Foundation, known for sponsoring the Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion, also encourages friendly conversations between religion and science. This anthology offers 48 brief essays from scientists, theologians, physicians, science writers and educators, invited by Stannard to comment on "the way our thinking should be revised in the light of what is known at the dawn of the twenty-first century." The better-known contributors include Paul Davies, Robert Jastrow, Mary Midgley and John Polkinghorne, who appear alongside familiar science-and-religion authors Ted Peters, Robert Russell and Arthur Peacocke. Topics include cosmic origins, evolution, mind and body, spirituality and medicine, our place in the universe and reading God's activity in nature. Stannard's collection is intentionally broad, although physics and cosmology are better represented than biology and psychology, and Christian perspectives dominate a discussion that also contains a few pieces from other religious traditions. Because the essays are addressed to a general readership, the authors set aside technical details and discursive arguments in favor of summaries and illustrations, bringing out a personal directness and warmth that are often lacking in more formal presentations. For readers who follow science-and-religion issues, the collection has the appeal and limitations of a sampler: its range of flavors, including a few distinctive pieces, compensates for its tiny portions and occasional bland items. 5.0 out of 5 stars God Is The Question And The Answer, August 31, 2009
This review is from: God For The 21St Century (Paperback)
I am surprised that there are not any previous reviews of this book. I would think that this subject would be of utmost interest to a very great share of human beings.
For there is no way we can come to an ultimate understanding of ourselves unless we come to some understanding of God.
Questioning ourselves about God is thus questioning ourselves about our own ultimate meaning and destiny. Among the topics covered are:
Creation and evolution
Life on other planets
Genetic engineering
Faith and medicine
The mind and the soul
Quantum physics

Among the contributors are Paul Davies, Robert Jastrow, Rod Davies, Owen Gingerich, Cyril Domb, Kitty Ferguson, Gregg Easterbrook, Sir John Haughton. The editor Ronald Stannard contributes an essay on the paradoxes of Science and Religion.
Some of the essays are challenging philosophically and a bit difficult to understand. But on the whole the work is clear and readable and provides a rich variety of insights on a broad range of cosmically interesting subjects. A number of them integrate the Science and Religion and may seem a kind of apologetics.
One of the most impressive set of essays points to the idea that conceiving the Universe without a Creator is perhaps even more impossible than conceiving the Universe as having a Creator.
I believe any person who is obsessed about ultimate questions will profit by reading this book.
