4.0 out of 5 stars A Book to read!, May 31, 2005
By
This review is from: God Called a Girl: How Mary Changed Her World--And You Can Too (Paperback)
Shannon Kubiak, author of God Called a Girl tells us that her book is not about Mary as much as it is about God and what God did with one willing teenager committed to Him. And it is about what He can do with all teenagers that are committed to Him and to being world changers.

Kubiak sees life as a God adventure. God knows our gifts and passions and purpose and challenges us to use them for His glory. She recognizes that our struggles with God and His purpose for us are all too often about us wanting to control. We so often believe that we know best, or that trusting God is too frightening.

Kubiak clarifies her statements with personal stories that are wonderful metaphors. She also provides a message that will help women be another girl that God calls.

This is a wonderful, thoughtful book for young women to read, ponder and then plan what they are going to do as world changers. But it is also a wonderful read for all of us because God is calling us all. So if you're an adult giving this book to an important young woman in your life, I would suggest that you read it too. It will spur you on to challenging yourself to think about and plan your commitment to impacting your sphere of influence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!, March 7, 2006
This review is from: God Called a Girl: How Mary Changed Her World--And You Can Too (Paperback)
Every time I pick up this book, I feel a call to pursue the God who gave everything for me.

Shannon Kubiak presents us with an awesome challenge: to answer our God with a "yes" - a "yes" that will change the world. We live in a world that needs to be touched by God, but so often we act like we have nothing to offer. Kubiak calls us to live like the princesses we are.

God has gifted each of us and has an incredible plan for our lives. This book will draw you closer to the One who has called you and placed His blessing upon you.

Shannon Kubiak wrote this book with an intended audience of tweener and teenage girls. However, her lessons are more than applicable for the adult woman as well. Shannon is a wonderful storyteller and makes Biblical truths applicable to today. It is an easy read and a great book for young women who are looking to pursue God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars for A Star of A Book, May 17, 2011
It was the beautiful cover that first caught my eye. I stood in the Books A Million. In the aisle I always shoot straight for after walking in the door ~ the Christian section with all of the devotionals for girls mixed in with the lovely looking Bibles.

When I read the title, I was hooked. A smile spread across my face when I flipped it over and read the back cover excerpt.

Mary, a simple, insignificant girl, was just a teenager when she revolutionized society and changed the world.

Whoa.

I bought it, brought it home and eagerly devoured every word. Though I didn't realize it at the time, this book catapulted me into the Christian Young Adult genre. God Called A Girl was the first book I read of this sort, and continues to be my favorite of all those that I have read since.

One quote that stands out among the first pages boasts scribbly inked lines that shout at to me, a message from my younger self: 'Don't forget this!' The book almost falls open to the spot automatically now, a testimony to my attempts to indeed, not forget.

"God likes to show up in ordinary things and make them extraordinary. The ordinary part is us; God is everything extra. We simply need to make ourselves available to Him. What He does with our availability is up to Him."

I had barely finished reading God Called A Girl when I ordered her Being A Girl series, which continued to amaze me with the honest voice singing forth from the pages, encouraging me to love, lead, and serve as only God's girls can.

I encourage you to look for God Called A Girl as well as Shannon Primicerio's many other titles. Amazingly, it wasn't until just last year that I bought The Divine Dance, her first book. Just like God Called A Girl, it doesn't disappoint.

Still, God Called A Girl remains my favorite of all of Shannon's works. Perhaps it is because of the kind big-sisterly tone used throughout, the way that Mary's story is told, unflinchingly and with purpose (just as she lived it), or perhaps it goes back to the little girl standing in the bookstore aisle...seeing that bright green cover and gasping at the very thought and thinking 'Really?':

"...Mary changed her world - and you can too."
