One Of The Better Gaming Guides By Brady Games, August 20, 2010
This review is from: God of War Collection Official Strategy Guide (Paperback)
This guide was my introduction to gaming guides, as I got it on a whim at a local GameStop, only because it happened to be priced at half-off. For $10, you simply can't beat this deal when it comes to gaming guides. And for that matter, you really can't beat this guide at the full price of $20, either. Like the game it's based on, it's truly an incredible deal because you're getting 2 gaming guides for the price of one. As for the guide itself, it's one of the better ones I've seen Brady Games put out. While it's not quite as thick or intricately detailed as the ones I've thumbed through for, say, `CALL OF DUTY : MODERN WARFARE 2' or `BATMAN : ARKHAM ASYLUM' it's still on the higher end of the scale for Brady Games's guides, as it's nowhere as thin or weak as some of the others I've seen them put out. Then again, both GOD OF WAR GAMES contained in this book are pretty linear and don't require exceptional amounts of detail like the previous 2 games I mentioned. The guide excels in just about every area, except for a few, as it covers the walkthroughs, item collection, etc. in enough detail to let you know where to go and some basic strategies to employ, without essentially playing the game for you. It also serves up excellent detail about all enemies and bosses as well as good strategies for defeating them. In addition to all of this it also covers the trophies, challenges and additional content such as the additional unlockable armors and what they do. But this is where the guide starts to get a little thin on content. While the challenges for each game are covered in adequate detail, I also felt it could have had more. I don't quite know what it was lacking but it felt like it was. When it came to the trophies however, this is where the guide was most woefully lacking. I know some people aren't trophy hunters, or at least to the extent I try to be, but at the same time, if you're going to put this in your guide, do more than just list them out and put a sentence or two next to a select few that prove to be more difficult. If it's a strategy guide you're writing, write the strategies for everything that requires it and that includes the trophies too. Granted, I realize this is a minor nitpick, but I feel it's worth mentioning. All in all, this is a really good, solid guide and well worth the money whether you want to use it as a bible to play the game by or simply for reference. If on the other hand, you're primary purpose of buying this is for the extras the games come with such as the challenges, trophies, etc., you're better off searching the Web, though it's not completely useless in these areas.
