As an avid book reader, this book would definitely be one of the more interesting books I've read in a while. The plot caught me completely by surprise and the characters were believable. At no point do they act in a way that could be construed as out of character. The plot was original; entertaining and in a way, heartbreaking at the same time. The book itself was very...

For God & Country

This book surpassed my expectations. From the moment I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I fell in love with the characters once I met them and that love continued to grow as I spent more time with them. The action kept me on the edge of my seat and the heartwarming scenes mixed in with the turmoil only served to enhance my expierence as a reader. I have and will continue to recommend this book to others. Amazing gift that should be bought for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Story, May 27, 2009
This review is from: For God & Country (Paperback)
In the world today it's almost impossible to find anything unique. The vast majority of entertainment is filled with overdone storylines, that are repeated and redone. This book is a true original. It's beautifully written and believable, at times you may feel as if you are actually in the story. For God & Country is one of the most captivating stories that I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Throughout the entire book you're taken on an emotional journey. At times you'll laugh, at others cry, and more than likely reevaluate the way you look at the world around you.

This book was a great read keeping me engrossed in the story all the way through the book. The pages kept turning because I wanted to see what was going to happen next, and before I knew it I was at the end. Very detailed keeping the reader involved in the story and I could "see" what was going on. I will definitely recommend this to everyone I know. Can't wait for the next book from Daniel...GREAT JOB!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid military portrayal, February 18, 2010
This review is from: For God & Country (Paperback)
I like his character development. He uses their development to get the reader to care about the characters and their situation. I enjoy the fact that even though it is military fiction that he uses real locations. It is an excellent depiction of a tight knit squad performing exactly what they were trained to do.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ridgecrest, CA local author's first book, August 31, 2009
This review is from: For God & Country (Paperback)
The reason I purchased this book was that it was written by an author who graduated from Mesquite High School, a local high school in Ridgecrest, CA where I live and I always am interested in local authors.

The story simply is about a Marine who comes back from the Iraq conflict after having seen action and gets deployed as a recruiter near where his family lives in Los Angeles. Then a coalition of countries who hate the US decide to attack Southern California while he and his Marine co-workers are on a camping trip.

Positive things first. I liked how the author depicted his warm Hispanic family life with his own family and his parents and his brother's family. Military life both on the front and while at home was depicted with humor and authentic language.

The action scenes were exciting and written with word pictures that brought the reader to the front lines.

I was afraid that this was going to be a preachy religious book because of the cover but it was not but the main characters do exhibit very ethical behavior in keeping with the traditions of the US Military. In fact, if you have a problem with colorful language, the language is how Marines speak at times and is appropriate for a novel about the Marine Corps. (There is plentiful deployment of the F-Bomb.)

The primary negative was that he really needed an editor. There were some strained sentences and sometimes the idiomatic English came out wrong such as the phrase "he ordered to" rather than he gave orders or he ordered. An editor would have caught the clumsy language.

The scenario is brings forth to start the action is a bit unrealistic but it did bring some amusing scenes such as combat with in indoor malls.

The book is also fairly short due to the fact that the type face is very large so it is more of a novella size than a 200 page book.

These are quibbles but some people may appreciate the description.
