5.0 out of 5 stars A fantasy read that grabs you and keeps you., October 1, 2005
This review is from: The God Decrees (Pt. I) (Paperback)
I was hooked from the moment I finished reading the free sample chapter online! I couldn't even wait for the paperback, but rather ordered the e-book right away. I'm a big fan of this type of story in which someone from our "real world" gets transported to a fantasy world with magic--one in which he or she can work magic. It's my escape from reality. The characters are interesting and real and well-written. The story kept my attention and Cooper made me care enough about them that I wanted to keep reading to know what happens to them. Ignore any typing mishaps you find--they won't spoil the story. I immediately ordered books 2 and 3 right after. I can't wait to continue the store when the 4th book is available. And the author is a nice guy too, which also goes a long way. He was kind enough to answer my e-mail and I wish him lots of luck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sorcerers, magic, and war. What more could you want? Well..., February 16, 2004

This review is from: The God Decrees (Pt. I) (Paperback)
Cooper's first fantasy novel features Julia Morton, a gymnast and strong favourite for a place in the British Olympic team. Julia has big plans for her life and is training hard to achieve them, when she is kidnapped and transported to another world. Lord Keverin is desperate for help to save his people from an invading army. Lord Mortain, a sorcerer and tyrant, is determined to increase his power by conquering Deva, but to do that he must first defeat Keverin who holds a fortress that has never fallen.

Deva used to have strong magic to defend it, but centuries have passed since that time. Keverin has his best friend cast a spell to summon a powerful mage to help him. The result of this spell is that his friend dies, Julia Morton is trapped on an alien world with no way home, and no mage to help them. Most of this book takes place in Athione, a huge fortress under siege. The last third does branch out into Deva to show us other places, but all the most important stuff happens in the first half of the book. I found the ending a little abrupt. It was satisfying in its way, but felt a little too quick.

Since reading this book, I have read the other two. The second one, called The Power That Binds, is the best in my opinion. It reads slower, which I like. I'm looking forward to book 4.
