4.0 out of 5 stars Dialogues and Debates Among Great Theologians
Christian history lovers can't converse with Augustine or Calvin, but Roger Olson presents imaginary conversations and debates with a host of great Christian and pseudo-Christian thinkers.

3.0 out of 5 stars a very interesting reading
I have mixed feelings after finishing the book. While my mind feels enlightened with all the reading and the ideas exposed, at the same time it left me with a confusion as to what exactly the author intention was. He gave some hints of his intentions at the conclusion but still I am kinda lost. My suggestions for any future edition or re-writings are: 1) highlight the...

4.0 out of 5 stars Dialogues and Debates Among Great Theologians, January 26, 2010
This review is from: God in Dispute: "Conversations" among Great Christian Thinkers (Paperback)
Christian history lovers can't converse with Augustine or Calvin, but Roger Olson presents imaginary conversations and debates with a host of great Christian and pseudo-Christian thinkers.
Would you want to sit down and discuss theology's significant issues with Calvin or Pannenberg? Then this is a volume that will help you engage their ideas as you ponder the dialogues Olson offers.

Among the important theological figures are:
- Augustine v. Pelagius
- Calvin v. Arminius,
- Barth v. Brunner
- Bultmann v. Pannenberg.

Olson delivers a unique way of communicating the ideas of important theologians that result in better understanding for the reader. Provocative, interesting, and informative.

He gave some hints of his intentions at the conclusion but still I am kinda lost. My suggestions for any future edition or re-writings are: 1) highlight the true words of the characters, so we know what really came from them; and 2) find other place of meeting people rather than the purgatory.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun read for theology nerds., October 16, 2012
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: God in Dispute: "Conversations" among Great Christian Thinkers (Paperback)
If you are one who likes to debate and discuss theology this book is a great fun read. It was far more detailed and thought through than I expected. It is 29 chapters/debates from early church fathers to modern theologians and a mash-up of everything in-between. Even as a theology student there were points when I lost interest or didn't quite understand the conversation. Possible reasons this was not a run-away best seller. Yet, it was a great book and a fun read. The best part is you if you have a minute you can read a chapter and put it down to come back another day.

Another example of Dr. Olson's ability to combine outstanding scholarship with interesting and engaging prose. It is always a pleasure to read his works.
