Book Description

December 1, 1995
Hauke provides a tour de force study of the history and basic characteristics of modern feminism. Hauke presents an objective, detailed study of the facts of feminist theology around the world, using their own words and writings. He looks at the distinctiveness of feminist theology, what its image of man is as a fundamental point of departure, its basis from the experience of women as "formal principle", its views of the image of God, Christ, Mary, the Church, liturgy, ecology and eschatology. After carefully describing what the feminist position is, Hauke gives a critique from the point of view of the Catholic tradition.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best introduction from a traditional point of view., September 7, 2003

This review is from: God or Goddess?: Feminist Theology : What Is It? Where Does It Lead? (Paperback)
Hauke, a German Catholic theologian, has for some time been on the forefront of a Catholic analysis of the feminist movement. He is very conversant with modern English-speaking femism and this book provides one of the best summaries and analyses of the subject. All the main themes are covered in great detail.
This would be a good bookto read if you are reading Daly, Elizabeth Clark, Byrne, etc.

Hauke is sympathetic to the questions raised by so-called feminism, but he is by no means supportive of the majority of its conclusions. Worth reading if you are a novice to the subject or well-versed. Great all around introduction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A CRITIQUE OF "GODDESS" RELIGION BY A GERMAN THEOLOGIAN, June 15, 2011
This review is from: God or Goddess?: Feminist Theology : What Is It? Where Does It Lead? (Paperback)
Manfred Hauke "is a German priest who teaches theology at the University of Augsburg." He is also the author of Women in the Priesthood?: A Systematic Analysis in the Light of the Order of Creation and Redemption.

He writes in the Introduction to this 1995 book, "The purpose of the present work is to provide, not a kind of 'encyclopedia' on feminist theology, but an introduction and representative survey of central themes that will enable one to form a personal opinion. What would constitute a positive response to the feminist challenge can often only be hinted at."

Here are some additional quotations from the book:

"(F)rom the very start, one of most important writers in the area of feminist theology has been the Catholic theologian Rosemary Radford Ruether, since 1976 a professor at a Protestant theological college in the USA. Despite the widespread interest in feminism, this professorship remains the sole chair in feminist theology in the United States." (Pg. 50)
"It is no wonder, then, that feminist artists (male and female) occasionally depict a 'Jesa Christa' on the cross---as occurred, for example, in the largest North American cathedral, the Episcopalian 'Saint John the Divine' in New York." (Pg. 164)
"What is required today is not to run breathlessly after the banner of androgynous or gynocentric feminism. The real need is a new self-assurance on the part of women, which should take its direction from Mary. According to Vatican II, Mary concentrates 'the greatest mysteries of the faith in herself and radiates them out again.'" (Pg. 260)
