4.0 out of 5 stars It's not the old Skynyrd - and you know what, get over it
Much of the criticism I have read about Lynyrd Skynyrd's newest album is that it sounds more modern than it does old school Skynyrd. Well, this isn't old school Skynyrd, and for good reason. There's only so many times we can listen to Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. God and Guns is not their best effort, but for a new Skynyrd album in the high times of teen sensation...

3.0 out of 5 stars I think Skynyrd's New One is pretty good!
Ok first off, this isn't supposed to sound like the legendary Skynyrd in case anyone forgot or didn't understand. Secondly, every other band these days are keeping the "brand" name of the band without there being but one or two original members in the band so to criticize Skynyrd over that is kinda pointless.
Either you like the new Skynyrd or you don't. I personally...

Much of the criticism I have read about Lynyrd Skynyrd's newest album is that it sounds more modern than it does old school Skynyrd. Well, this isn't old school Skynyrd, and for good reason. There's only so many times we can listen to Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama. God and Guns is not their best effort, but for a new Skynyrd album in the high times of teen sensation crap, this is a most welcomed album and a delight. Unfortunately radio stations (at least in my local area) play old school tunes from older bands. When I hear AC/DC, all I hear is Back in Black or Hells Bells (both great tunes), but I have yet to hear any station play a tune from Ballbreaker or even an older album like Flick of the Switch. When I hear Skynyrd on the radio it is always Sweet Home Alabama or the (ridiculous) radio cut of Free Bird (cutting 4-5 minutes from the song). It's unfortunate I will never hear a tune from God and Guns because it is a solid album. It is one of those albums that really has no "stick-out" single - by that I mean a song that stands out from the rest. It is a better album to listen to it's entirety rather than just a single tune.

I can certainly understand those who don't like it because it isn't the Lynyrd Skynyrd you grew up with, but all bands change their tune a bit over time. At least we still have classic bands putting out new albums in this day in age where real music is dying and YouTube crap is taking over the airwaves.

5.0 out of 5 stars New and IMPROVED Lynrd Skynrd, August 20, 2010
This review is from: God & Guns (Amazon MP3 Exclusive Version) (MP3 Download)
A lot of reviewers just want to compare this Skynyrd to the original Skynyrd. They are not this; or, they are not that,Yada, Yada, Yada/ The original band was great in their time period but this band is great now. In some ways (Religious undertow, patriotic) they are better. Think of it as the New Skynyrd with IMPROVED messaging.

Well , Let me tell ya all something. I remember the original band. The fact of the matter is I was at the last concert ever played by the original band. These guys had they all survived were on their way. It was unfortunate what happened to them in the plane crash, My thoughts on the new band well, they still managed to catch the drums, and the lead and the heavy bass that Lynyrd Skynryd. was known for. To the un trained ear and even the trained ear the vocals are so close that on some songs, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Will there ever be another band like the orginal. Hell no, but they come awful darn close. And in this ole boys eyes and ears thats just fine with me.

Rock on my friends Rock on. May the Free Bird always carry you to Sweet Home Alabama. Heaven has one Hell Of a band.

3.0 out of 5 stars I think Skynyrd's New One is pretty good!, November 18, 2009

Secondly, every other band these days are keeping the "brand" name of the band without there being but one or two original members in the band so to criticize Skynyrd over that is kinda pointless.
Either you like the new Skynyrd or you don't. I personally feel like it's pretty decent. I guess the best way I can put it is that it's totally worth $2.99 but I probably would never spend $9.99 on it.

The sound is definitely that of southern rock/country and I would say it even tends to lean towards country quite a bit more than maybe what this current lineup is used to even though I haven't heard all of their newer stuff. Is it better than old Skynyrd? Of course not! The old Skynyrd was LEGENDARY. This version of Skynyrd is just pretty good.
Nothing too special but to me they are more of just a tribute to the original. It's the closest thing we'll get in 2009 and I am totally OK with them carrying on the name as they do.

If there was one negative I would say about this album it is that it sounds a little overproduced especially on the vocals. It might be, though, that Johnny Van Zant actually sounds that way and it's just my ears so I dunno.

To me, "God & Guns" sounds kind of in the vein of Nickelback were they to do a more country-tinged album. I wasn't alive when Skynyrd was big (born in '82) but I grew up on their songs as my parents always had them playing and I love their back catalogue. This is my first time buying a Skynyrd album from the new line-up and I have to say I was somewhat impressed. The best songs are: "Still Unbroken", "Southern Ways", "Floyd", "That Ain't My America" and "God & Guns".

My advice: Go ahead and spend the $2.99 on it while you can because it's ALMOST a steal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still Great, Just Older, October 4, 2009

Look folks, these guys have been making music longer than a lot of their fans have been alive. Do you really want them to sound just like they did 20 years ago?? It is still great music and it is written from the heart as you can tell from references to their children and such. They are not drugged up ego driven rock stars. These are guys who know what they are and where they are in life and the music STILL ROCKS and I love it. Some gave them less than 5 stars and since they will forever be compared to people that are not even alive anymore its kinda hard to live up to that for anyone. Led Zeppelin only had one Stairway to Heaven and these guys only had one Freebird thats real life. Just sit back and enjoy and crank it up and be glad you can, Skynyrd Nation .....

Trying to make it in today's sound, they done a great job. This album is really good. I love the beat, and clear lyrics. This is not like old Skynyrd, thou! All artist are mixing the beat to compete in the market. I loved the sound and listen to it daily, jamming it now. I suggest getting it, lets be honest blow $9 on a piece of ear heaven or mcdonalds. You will be happy with the selection. If in doubt listen on Pandora first, for free, then return to Amazon and get the MP3 album. I love Amazon MP3's they play great in iTunes as well. I hope you enjoy this album, jam it load, that's how it was designed, so crank it up! Feel the beat, hear the lyrics, and just feel it!

2.0 out of 5 stars God abd Guns?, November 18, 2009
This review is from: God & Guns (Amazon MP3 Exclusive Version) (MP3 Download)
Um . . . is this the same band that wrote Saturday Night Special? Well, no, of course it isn't. This music doesn't reflect or sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band seems to be aiming for gigs at State Fairs and Sean Hannity rallies. I'm sure they'll find an audience there, but it won't be because of anything to do with music.

This b.s. makes me embarassed to call myself a skynyrd man. The Van Zant's should be ashamed of themselves, and stick to calling their garbage "Van Zant". I saw the first tour with johnny, the "Southern by the Grace of God" tour, where they did an instumental version of Freebird, saying "No one can ever sing this on stage but Ronnie," Now these faggots do it every night. Shamefull.
