my favorite album by one of my favorite bands,

This review is from: God Has Failed (Audio CD)
This is my favorite album of one of my very favorite bands. To bring more meaning into this statement let me tell you that I have started collecting albums at the age of 10. I must have listened to a few thousand albums besides the 5,000 I have decided to keep on my hard drive. RPWL is one of the best rock bands around. Kalle Wallner (listen to Black Despair off his first solo Blind Ego album) might be the best guitarists of his generation and Yogi Lang is one of the most talented keyboardists and song writers. I am not sure why God Has Failed and not World Through My Eyes is my favorite album of theirs. It was also their first album released in 2000. Farewell is my favorite song on this album and one of their best. Please listen to it 7 times. It is spectacular. Never mind the lyrics of this particular song... Listen to the song structure; listen to the buildup of the guitar solo. Another great song on this album is Crazy Lane. Here Yogi is at his best lyrically. His songs are not addressed to your ears but directly to your soul. They are so uplifting and reassuring. There is not much music here at times but there is plenty of atmosphere flowing around. World Through My Eyes might be a stronger album overall but God Has Failed has a certain Pink-Floyd-ish feel to it that I like so much.

This first release for the German prog band RPWL is a good cd. Not great, but good. A bit too long in songs for a single cd, but there are some outstanding moments. Examples: Hole in the Sky (all 3 parts) is great! My next favorite track is In Your Dreams. After these 2 the rest of the tracks run from good to ok. A little bit too surreal for my liking. Too many slow paced tracks. All in all a good cd. If your an RPWL fan this is a must as it shows where they started and the rest you know. I am glad I found it and do think any fan of this style of prog rock will enjoy this cd.

If you're not familiar with RPWL they are a German band that started off as a Pink Floyd tribute band. The Pink Floyd references are certainly here and are on subsequent albums because, after all, that's how they got their start. This band does such a great job in their harmonies where that might be the best parts of each of their albums. As with any group, they have matured over their career and their latest in 2008, 'The RPWL Experience' is their best to date. But, you can start here and will not be disappointed if you're looking for something different in the progressive world of music.

These guys are something else!! When I first read that they were a Pink Floyd tribute band, I kinda smirked and thought, "Yeah, right ... How can you improve on the original? Blah-blah-blah" but when I heard this album, it completely blew me away. Nice melodies, spacey (yes, Floydian) musical passages, and all with a very original approach. I highly recommend this album to those who wish to try and find it now that it's out-of-print. It's definitely worth the hunt! RPWL (along with Porcupine Tree and Spock's Beard, among others) are indeed keeping the prog alive with each release ... and thank the music gods for that! :-)
