Jamaican Dancehall Music is American Hip-Hop's first cousin. I've always thought of most gospel music as rather feminine. Worship music is feminine, which is cool because as the Bride of Christ all us Christians must take the feminine posture before God. But also we are co-workers with God. Furthermore we are soldiers in God's Army. So where's the war music? Hard core, hip-hop, and dancehall are all very masculine in nature. They are aggressive and they are looking to engage in something they be passionate about. It's that way in the (unsaved) world and it's that way in Body of Christ. The only difference is who young aggressive Christian males are engaging with. Like MC Hammer said "When I got saved I didn't quit dancing...I just changed partners."I grew up on testosterone driven music like hip-hop, hard rock, with some reggae/dancehall threw in for good measure. I still like all of it but I'm excruciatingly selective about the lyrical content of the music I allow in my home (I'm the father of three boys.) I love to here my boys basically saying in essence "to hell with the devil" with a passion. Just as many rap artists speak plainly about there intentions to get laid, or to do violence Papa San speaks plainly about how he intends to stay faithful to his wife (...me have a wife and me not commit adultery, me not go walk in a company where they only have a fools and blinds...) and avoid violence (...me flesh rise up, me just want create a scence, have to ask the Lord to keep me heart clean..). This is no small thing in that it is a counteractive to the blantant matter-of-fact way in which secular artists who's product is aimed at young men speak about their intentions. Papa San very unpretentiously takes Christian intentionality out of the theoretical ("...buckin' them demons..." ala T-bone) into the reality of everyday life ("...flee from pornography..." ala Papa San). One secular commentator when speaking about the Amy Grant scandal said that Christian Contemporary music is the only music that is categorized by it's lyrical content. That's why her scandal divorced her from many of her fans. Papa San has endeared me to himself because he chants about that which concerns me which is the fight to be the man of God I ought to be. Finally, the song "I call her blessed" is an unusual tribute to Papa San's wife. The song is unusual in that instead of being the usual "love" song in which one person worshipping another (...baby I can't live without you, yada, yada, yada...) Papa San expresses a passionate, intimate, and personal appreciation for his wife's GODLINESS. If you're married (or hope to be) this is a point not to miss. I've complained in my mind for the whole 10 plus years I've been married about my wife's short comings. This is the first song that I've ever heard that causes me to express appreciation for what's really important about my wife. Most "love" songs express appreciation for physical beauty, personality traits, or sexual attractiveness. If you've been married any length of time you know that that stuff plays out quickly. What's left is the core of a person. Papa San has gone where no Christian artist has gone in the arena of love songs. Instead of putting a christian suit on the "I worship my lover" formula he puts the heart of God back in the body of the male/female relationship song and makes it what it was suppose to be in the first place. I love it. By the way, any dancehall/reggae afficianodo will like this compilation musically. It's really, really well done but the lyrics makes it for me.

this cd was sent to my husband by a christian music club by accident. he's not that familiar with papa san but i am. when i first heard it, i couldn't believe how good it was. we both enjoy it & i have listened to it nearly everyday since. i was a long time reggae/dance hall/soca listener but since i have been saved for 10 yrs, i didn't find much music that caught my attention. we buy only christian music & we are very picky. this cd's lyrics & production are very impressive. it's not fluff or garbage! you can't sit, you have to move to this cd. i am buying more copies to give to my grown sons who still (unfortunately) listen to secular reggae. i believe this cd will help them make the switch & be a great witnessing tool (especially to teenagers). may God continue to bless you papa san, your wife & family. please continue to use the gift that God the Father gave you to glorify Him. REAL men love JESUS CHRIST!!!!

One of the Best & Most Unique Gospel Albums I've ever had.,
This review is from: God & I (Audio CD)
I always rated Papa San from as far back in he early 90s when he was doing secular music because of his hard working style and lyrical speed. Not only he's still one of the fastest dancehall artist out there, but also he's now using that same God-given talent in the most unique and inspirational way, praising the Lord.
All the songs will get u rocking, dancing, and praising in a heartbeat. "Pop style", "Step pon di Enemy", "I know", "Can't flee from your Presence", "I call her blessed", and "Stay far" are some of my favorites. Papa San's "God & I" is a reminder that God can speak through any form of music he chooses. This album is a MUST HAVE, as it represents Papa San and Dancehall & Gospel music at his true best.

On August 4 this yr, I saw Papa San in concert, and this was the first time seeing him as a christian. I am used to him as the dancehall artiste. Let me tell you how this man sang all the songs on the God & I CD @ the concert, that I went out the next day and bought it. He sang for over 2 hrs, I could not believe he was on stage that long, and the show was only $10.CDN yet he wasnt the only artiste. He is certainly annoited, and a changed person. My personal fave is God & I (Jesus make me smile again) that is a true testimony for me and i wll continue to lift up God for he is an awesome God. Papa San is a great singer that inspires....GO OUT & BUY THE CD......You WILL love it.....God Bless.

This 2nd gosepl cd from Papa San is truly a great piece of work. There are a few songs that are weaker than others but overall, it isan excellently produced cd.The cd gives a very insightful look at San's walk with God, and he tells his story in his usual lyrically rich ways. The man is a master with words. Best tracks: Track 2 [Utterly awesome!] Track 3 [Wonderful! Background vocals tight, gives it a warm feel good vibe] Track 9 ...Wicked! Track 10 Wonderfully Hard nice street vibe Track 11 Tuff! Track 12. Gotta mention that the use of live instruments on this project definitely gives it an edge. If you know Dancehall music, you'll pick up that the productions are normally endless loops and hooks with no real musical progressions. Not this project, this is an excellent mix of digital and live recordings. A definite MUST BUY! Highly Recommended

This cd was excellent. I had never heard of Papa San before i heard his first single Breathe Again. I was immediately hooked to the song. I never thought about Reggae Gospel but it works. So far Track 1 is my favorite (probably because it has the most english)but overall i love the cd . Hopefully one day i can sing-a-long with the whole cd and not just listen and dance.
